Fast and Free: All the Facts on Returns with Drive Up

  • Updated 9:00am CT | Jun 26, 2023

Target is making shopping even easier for guests with the option to make product returns right from their cars using Returns with Drive Up — for no charge. It’s one of the latest enhancements to our popular Drive Up service, which lets guests pick up orders placed through their Target.com account without leaving their vehicle. Returns with Drive Up has already launched at hundreds of Target stores across the U.S. and is expected to reach all of our nearly 2,000 locations by the end of the summer. It’s one more example of how we’re leading the way on ease and affordability to create a truly differentiated shopping experience.

How it works

Once Returns with Drive Up becomes available at a local store, guests will see the option appear in their Target app. Using the service is simple:

Returns with Drive Up will be available free of charge for purchases made through guests’ Target.com account, whether in-store, on the Target app or on Target.com. And it builds on our convenient and painless return policy: Guests can return most new, unopened items within 90 days of purchase — and up to a year for Target-owned brands — for free.

Where to find it

Returns with Drive Up began rolling out to Target stores in April 2023 and is now available at all stores, nationwide.

Evolving the store experience

Returns with Drive Up is one example of how Target continues to innovate around our same-day services — Drive Up, Order Pickup and Same-Day Delivery with Shipt. The service enhances guests’ shopping in lots of ways, including:

Added convenience: It's a stress-free option for guests with kids or pets in tow, those with disabilities, or anyone who wants or needs to stay in the comfort of their car and keep moving to their next destination.

Extra speed: Instead of dropping off a package at a mail carrier to be shipped and then processed, guests can hand it over directly to a Target Drive Up team member and get their refund that much faster.

Behind the scenes: the growth of Drive Up

We launched Drive Up in Minneapolis in 2017 as an extension to our store pickup offering, and by 2019, the service was available in all 50 states. In 2020, we added the ability to get fresh and frozen grocery items through Drive Up, and in 2021, adult beverages. As we’ve enhanced our offerings, Returns with Drive Up has been one of the most-requested services from our guests.

Returns with Drive Up is powered by Target’s stores, which serve as hubs for in-person shopping, same-day fulfillment services and shipping orders. Our investment in the service positions Target for long-term growth, while also supporting our commitment to our stores-as-hubs strategy.

Quote from Mark Schindele, executive vice president and chief stores officer, Target

“Our journey to expand our fulfillment options starts with making it easier for our guests to shop with us. That’s why we’re launching Returns with Drive Up. Allowing our guests to process a return from the comfort of their car underscores our commitment to helping our guests shop — and return — however they choose.”
