Our Latest Stores and Enhanced Services Offer *Even More* to Love

We’ve been opening Target stores at a steady clip, bringing must-have fashion, on-trend exclusives and affordable groceries and essentials to more guests around the country. In 2023, we opened 21 new stores in 10 states coast to coast, in communities ranging from bustling urban hubs and sprawling suburbs to college campuses. That’s 21 new opportunities for millions more guests to enjoy an oh-so-inspiring shopping experience and the best service in the industry, courtesy of Team Target.

As we open more stores, we’re also improving our ability to get you, our guests, everything you need, when and how you want it, with enhancements to our fast and free fulfillment services like Drive Up, Order Pickup and same-day delivery — and investments in our best-in-class supply chain network, bringing next-day delivery to more neighborhoods.

From more stores to more deliveries, we’ve set an ambitious pace moving into 2024. For a glimpse of what’s to come, let’s look at the newest examples of Target’s winning retail formula.

New to you

At 125,000 square feet, the average Target store is already a big deal, but we've got room to grow. We’re adding more large-format stores, including a dozen built in 2023 alone. The goal: to deliver the best shopping experience to guests in these communities with an open layout, expanded assortment and large backrooms to support our popular same-day fulfillment services.

For some communities — think dense city centers or college campuses — Target flexes to fit with our smaller formats. We opened nine of these locations in 2023, ranging from Auburn Toomer’s Corner in Alabama — a one-stop shop for local college students at just under 20,000 square feet — to three-story Brooklyn Kings Plaza in New York at just over 92,000 square feet.

Big or small, our newest stores reflect their neighborhoods through decorative touches and localized assortments. For example: our murals featuring The Notorious B.I.G. and Aaliyah at Brooklyn Kings Plaza in New York and celebrating the vibrant Inglewood neighborhood in Los Angeles.

Each year we also expand into new markets with our special mix of joy, ease and affordability. In 2023, guests in four communities — Jamestown, New York; Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; Quincy, Illinois; and Grass Valley, California — made their first close-to-home Target run.

And we’re big on building our presence in our largest markets, giving guests in these bustling areas more convenient locations to shop while improving our operational efficiencies. Nearly half of our new stores in 2023 opened in California and New York. This includes Manhattan Union Square in New York, our 100th store in the greater New York City area.

Better than ever

While our newest stores have a certain sparkle, we also remodeled more than 160 existing stores across the country in 2023 to make your shopping experience that much better. That includes adding more space for Drive Up and Order Pickup, new fitting rooms and remodeled team spaces in stores like our Mason City, Iowa, location, and introducing full grocery at our Wasilla, Alaska, store.

Our growing number of shop-in-shops are also a powerful way to enhance the shopping experience by giving you convenient access to top brands. In addition to refreshing or adding more than 80 Starbucks Cafes in 2023, we opened more than:

140
Ulta Beauty locations
40
Apple Shops
20
Disney Clubhouses

How’s this for forward thinking? To support our Target Forward goal of net-zero emissions by 2040, we continue to add features like natural refrigerants, electric vehicle charging and rooftop solar panels to existing and new stores.

Delivering the goods

Whether you make your Target run in person or online, our nearly 2,000 stores are at the center of it all — providing an oh-so-enjoyable shopping experience and serving as fulfillment hubs for your digital orders, powered by our incredible team members. It’s our stores-as-hub strategy in a nutshell, and why we constantly invest in new and better locations: to provide you with more choice and convenience, however you choose to shop. In fact, since 2017, we’ve opened more than 180 new stores and remodeled more than half of our network.

At our stores, we’re always enhancing our fast and free fulfillment services in response to guest feedback, leveling up the joy and convenience. Been to Drive Up lately? Chances are you’ve ordered a Starbucks Café beverage to be delivered with your Drive Up order or made a return. Both features, which rolled out nationally in 2023, show that together, we can make a good thing better.

Because our stores fulfill most digital orders, we’re expanding our network of sortation centers — supply chain facilities where our team sorts, batches and routes orders that our store team members pack for local delivery. With more sortation centers close to more stores, we can deliver more packages to more guests next day. We’re also testing new types of fulfillment facilities, like the Target Last Mile Delivery extension, which opened last year in Smyrna, Georgia, to expand our reach even further.

New stores, new services, new capabilities — none of these are possible without Team Target. Whether providing an amazing shopping experience, staffing our fulfillment services or supporting the supply chain, we truly deliver the goods. And with more new locations and investments planned for 2024, the best is yet to come.
