As Target continues to elevate the guest experience, reliability, speed and precision across our supply chain have never been more important. That’s why we’re excited to welcome Jeff England as our new chief supply chain and logistics officer (CSCLO) to accelerate our momentum.

Jeff joins Target with over 20 years of operations and supply chain leadership experience within retail. Throughout his career, Jeff has built deep expertise in leading both site teams and end-to-end supply chains, with a strong emphasis on technology and operational excellence.

We chatted with Jeff to learn more about his background, leadership style, and focus for Target’s supply chain.

Q:

What drew you to Target and this role?

A:

Target is such an iconic brand and it’s a really exciting opportunity to join at the beginning of a new chapter. I’m confident in the strategy and priorities that have been set, and I believe deeply in the impact that a reliable and agile supply chain network can have on the pace of growth. I look forward to building on the strong foundation that already exists here. I was also incredibly impressed with all the leaders I got to know through the interview process. A lot of intentionality and integrity came through in every conversation.

Q:

You’ve led supply chain teams at several organizations. What principles and lessons guide you as a leader?

A:

The journey to becoming a leader was as impactful as the leadership roles themselves. I grew up in a small rural town and was one of the first in my family to go to college. I worked various jobs from maintenance in a shingle factory to selling suits to night shifts at a restaurant, eventually putting myself through school. I interviewed with Walmart when they were recruiting on campus, and that began my now 22-year corporate career. I share all that to say — your starting place in life doesn’t determine your destination. I believe in the results of hard work, perseverance and continuous learning. And I think it’s important to evaluate and nurture potential as much as performance. Performance is success in a current role — potential is the ambition and ability to advance further.

Q:

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for Target’s supply chain?

A:

The team has made great strides improving reliability, speed, and efficiency for shoppers. This next phase is now about accelerating progress in those areas with technology and operational excellence. We need to modernize how we plan, move, and deliver products, and we need the right systems in place that enable consistent and repeatable performance. With so many decisions and actions happening every hour across a supply chain of this size, AI and automation can speed up manual and repetitive tasks so the team can spend more time on other meaningful work. Technology won’t change our plans, just enhance them — and improve our team members’ experience at the same time.

Q:

Target’s supply chain supports thousands of stores and millions of guests. How do you think about driving change across that scale?

A:

One of the most important things as a leader in supply chain is ensuring the team knows I’ve walked in their shoes. I’ve worked in warehouses and distribution centers loading 53-foot trailers in 100-degree heat. I’ve gotten my forklift certification. I’ve labeled cases one by one. As I join Target, I’ll do the same — I’ll spend a lot of early time in our facilities and stores around the country working side by side with the team and getting to know them. Understanding the ins and outs of people’s daily operations is the best way to learn how to support their different needs. And when people feel supported and empowered, they drive change and transformation. From there, it’s about making sure every single team member has the right tools and clarity to move forward with speed.

Q:

What is always in your Target cart?

A:

My wife and I just welcomed a baby girl, so right now our cart is filled with diapers and wipes. We also usually stock up on good coffee, energy drinks and small home essentials we convince ourselves we need. And without fail, my wife always sneaks in a few new apparel items along the way. We never leave Target with only the items we came for, which I’m sure many others can relate to.
