Since launching the Target Scholars program in 2021, we’ve continued to enhance and expand our support for students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Earlier this year we offered each student in the program an additional $10,000 to help them complete their degrees, and now, we’re furthering our commitment by launching the Target Scholars Sophomore Internship Program. This new program will give second-year students meaningful work experience in Target business areas including stores, supply chain facilities, tech and merchandising over 8-10 weeks. Each class of up to 100 Target Scholars will have the opportunity to work on projects across the business, develop important skills and use tailored resources and support.
“This internship program will have offerings across technology, Target stores, supply chain and product development,” says Maya Moss, lead executive recruiter for Target. “We look forward to providing students with an opportunity to gain relevant working experience while continuing their college education, whether they have an interest in working for Target long-term or want to gain knowledge and skills as they look to their junior year.”
Supporting HBCU students on their college journeys and beyond
Expanding our Target Scholars program is just another way we’re strengthening our ongoing relationships with HBCUs. We believe partnering with HBCUs is essential to ensuring Black guests and team members see themselves represented in our products, stores and teams. We’re also committed to helping develop the next generation of Black talent, with partnerships, programs and resources that provide opportunities for students to create meaningful careers and build their professional networks. This latest initiative builds on our recent commitments in support of HBCU students, including launching the Sprite Zero Sugar x Target HBCU STEAM Challenge which celebrates students’ creativity, being a founding supporter of PENSOLE Lewis College of Business & Design (the country’s first design-focused HBCU), and our Target Lab workshops and events.
Creating lasting change
By providing more development opportunities for our Target Scholars, we’re also advancing our Racial Equity Action and Change (REACH) commitments and efforts to co-create an equitable future for all through our Target Forward strategy. Inclusivity is a core value at Target, and we’re proud to continue accelerating our investments and finding new ways to support Black students and Black communities.
