Inside Target’s Plans to Spend More Than $2 Billion with Black-Owned Businesses by 2025

One big reason guests love shopping at Target? Our teams work hard to make sure everyone who shops with us feels welcome and included.

Today, we’re building on those efforts with a commitment to spend more than $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025. It will help us create more equitable experiences for our Black guests, and use our company’s size, scale and resources to create economic opportunity for Black-owned businesses that extends outside of Target.

As part of the commitment, we plan to:

  • Increase the number of products from Black-owned businesses to more than 500 across our stores and online.
  • Spend more with Black-owned companies including marketing agencies, construction companies, facilities maintenance providers and others.
  • Establish new resources, including Forward Founders, a program designed to engage with Black entrepreneurs early in their startup journey and help them grow and scale their businesses in mass retail. Forward Founders was built on the success of our Target Accelerators program and co-created with Black entrepreneurs from its advisory council.

“We have a rich history of working with diverse businesses, but there’s more we can do to spark change across the retail industry, support the Black community and ensure Black guests feel welcomed and represented when they shop at Target,” says Christina Hennington, executive vice president and chief growth officer. “The bold actions we’re announcing today reflect Target’s ongoing commitment to advance racial equity for the Black community. They also represent significant economic opportunity for hundreds of new Black-owned companies, who we look forward to doing business with for years to come.”

This commitment is just one example of how Target’s Racial Equity Action and Change strategy — and its focus on four key areas: Guests, Team, Communities, and Civic Engagement and Public Policy — is helping us make faster and more meaningful progress across our business.

Our partners are already making waves

Over the years, Target has supported Black-owned businesses in a number of ways, and our $2-billion commitment will help us accelerate those efforts. We’ve worked with brands and suppliers through opportunities like Target Accelerators and our Black-Owned Business Vendor Fair, offering resources, mentorship opportunities and more as they developed and scaled their businesses. Many of those partners go on to do business with Target — including in our beauty category, where we have a strong representation of 50 Black-owned and Black-founded brands and counting.
