Express Self-Checkout is Delivering a Faster, More Enjoyable Target Experience

Check it out: About one year since its debut, Express Self-Checkout is helping guests in our stores get on their way sooner, however they want to complete their Target run.

Guests told us they wanted a choice in how they completed their store purchase, whether it’s at the self-checkout or with a team member. So, in March 2024, we rolled out our Express Self-Checkout lanes with limits of 10 items or fewer at most of our nearly 2,000 stores nationwide. The big idea? We wanted to give guests an even easier and more convenient option for those quick trips, so they can get their shopping done faster.

Meanwhile, we opened more traditional lanes staffed by our best-in-retail team for when your cart is full, with more than 25,600 nationwide.

With these changes, we’ve created a faster checkout experience overall, improving total transaction times by nearly 8%. And according to the Net Promoter Score (NPS) for checkout — a measure of customer experience — we’ve improved our already high score for wait times by 5 points.

Our team is always laser-focused on delivering a better experience for guests, and that’s exactly what they get with Express Self-Checkout. Whether guests are grabbing stuff for dinner or running in to pick up a post-soccer tournament treat, we know their time is valuable, and they often need to be on their way quickly. By giving them a few options for checking out — on their own, with a team member or even using Drive Up — we’re making their experience fast, easy and on their terms.

Beyond a faster transaction, guests tell us they’re enjoying their time with our team members more, too. Whether they’re offering a helping hand, providing a moment of connection or sharing more ways to save with your Target Circle membership, our team members simply make the shopping experience better. In fact, the NPS for interaction at checkout is up 3 points.

With results like these, we’ll continue to enhance and evolve the checkout experience — whether you choose to take Express Self-Checkout or visit our team member-assisted lanes. Add in our same-day fulfillment services like Drive Up, Order Pick Up and our same-day delivery, and we’re delivering the convenience, joy and value of the Target run, however, whenever and wherever you want to shop.
