More Than A Store

A Target store is more than just a building.

It’s affordable choices for fresh food, everyday essentials and inspiring style.

For our team members, it’s an opportunity to gain skills, tap into tuition-free college and build rewarding careers.

For the community, it’s a shopping destination. No matter what’s on your shopping list, you can stock up, discover only-at-Target finds and check out quickly, or use one of our easy same-day service options like Drive Up or Order Pickup. Prefer to take your time? It’s a great opportunity to discover all the newness in our aisles.

And for our business, it’s where our growth strategy comes to life — the stage where trend-forward design and style meet value, where tech enhances every moment, and where our empowered teams create an easy, inspiring and friendly experience that delights our guests.

With more than 2,000 stores from coast to coast, Target is within 10 miles of 75% of the U.S. population. And we’re getting even closer, opening dozens of new stores every year, putting us within reach of more consumers and setting us up for long-term growth. That’s because our stores are at the center of the Target experience — giving us not only a stage for our inspiring, affordable assortment and convenient services, but also a base to prep and deliver digital orders, so guests can shop how they want, when they want.

In fact, our stores fulfill 95% of our digital orders, including same-day delivery service with Target Circle 360, which currently reaches 80% of the U.S. population.

In 2026, we’re set to open 30 stores, as part of our path to 300 new stores by 2035 — putting us in more communities and setting us up for long-term growth. As we build new stores, more than 130 are getting a refresh, in states from California to New York. This includes updated layouts that are easier to navigate, with many locations offering expanded grocery sections, modernized amenities and more fulfillment services.

Then there’s Team Target: Each addition to our store network provides rewarding jobs whether team members stay with us for a season or a long-term career. We have long invested in our teams, with a starting wage range of $15 to $24 per hour (depending on the role and location), competitive benefits and tuition-free education assistance. (Want to join our team? Check out our stores job opportunities.)

Every new store also extends Target’s culture of care into more communities, to support local needs. In 2025, our team members invested more than 1 million hours of community service and Target donated more than $458 million in product and cash to the places our stores call home.

Sizing up the situation

Across much of the country, our typical Target store averages about 125,000 square feet, although we’ve built the capabilities to open and operate stores in spaces of any size — from small-format stores under 20,000 square feet in dense urban areas to large-format stores topping 150,000 square feet in sprawling suburbs.

Each week, more than 30 million guests shop our stores, with even more visiting the Target app and Target.com to shop, browse or plan their Target run.

Frequently asked questions

Guests are always curious about our stores and our growth plans. Here are just a few of the most popular questions we see about our network.

Q:

Does Target have any stores outside of the U.S.?

A:

No. And despite the popular rumor, we do not have any stores in Australia.

Q:

Which states have the most Target stores?

A:

California (300+), Texas (150+), Florida (130+), New York (100+) and Illinois (100+) rank in the top five by number of Target stores. Because the right expansion in the right markets matters for our guests, we'll continue opening stores in any state where demand and opportunity are growing.

Q:

What is the smallest and largest Target store?

A:

The smallest Target store is an 11,600-square-foot small format located in West Lafayette, Indiana. The largest — in Elmhurst, N.Y. — measures more than 230,000 square feet. While our original “Super Target” format was retired in 2011, we’re committed to large formats in a big way, opening 28 new stores surpassing our 125,000 square foot average in 2026.
