Target makes intentional choices about our sourcing and operations that help reduce waste while providing our guests with the affordable products they rely on. We focus first on minimizing the amount of waste we produce, then on maximizing our waste diversion efforts to reduce the volume that we send to landfills.
Supply Chain Resilience
We work closely with our suppliers to bring innovative products and solutions to our guests while advancing sustainability and strengthening resilience across our value chain.
Our work in action
Modernizing our operations
We are building energy efficiency into our operations by switching refrigeration systems in our grocery sections to natural refrigerants, replacing natural gas heating with electric systems and transitioning to LED lighting. Renewable electricity procurement, including on-site solar and virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs), help us lower costs, support operational reliability and serve our guests consistently. In 2025, we exceeded our goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 absolute emissions* in our operations by 55% from a 2017 baseline, achieving a 67.9% reduction — five years ahead of schedule.
* We categorize our GHG emissions in alignment with globally recognized definitions. Scope 1 includes direct GHG emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organization (e.g., emissions associated with fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles, etc.). Scope 2 includes indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat or cooling.
