Climate Policy

Background

Target acknowledges that climate change and related disruptions continue to affect the operating environment, including the communities and ecosystems our business depends on. These impacts can create risks for our operations, supply chain, team and guests, making resilience and operational continuity an important part of how we manage our business.

Our policy

Target’s net zero1 ambition helps drive our efforts to build a more efficient and resilient business by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption across our operations and value chain. Consistent with this ambition, Target supports the Paris Agreement, science-aligned action, and national, regional and local policy solutions to reduce emissions and build resilience to climate change. In 2019, the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) approved our climate goals and, in 2023, we updated them to ensure continued alignment with the Corporate Net Zero Standard. We recognize key framework bodies like Greenhouse Gas Protocol, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), CDP, RE100 and SBTi are evolving alongside state-based rules and federal policy. Target will monitor and track these changes while maintaining our commitment to transparent disclosure and strong internal controls and documentation.

Our climate efforts support long-term growth by strengthening the resilience and efficiency of our operations and value chain:

  • Increasing adoption of renewable energy in our own operations, on the electricity grid and in our supply chain.
  • Driving energy efficiency in our own operations and in our supply chain.
  • Investing in innovations supporting the transition to a zero-carbon transportation system, including vehicle electrification.
  • Investing in solutions that protect, sustain and restore nature, through regenerative and lower carbon practices.
  • Supporting communities most heavily impacted by climate change and building their resilience to climate change impacts, like extreme weather events.

Achieving net zero emissions will require massive action and concerted effort across the private and public sectors. We are working to advance policies that support the innovation, investment and collaboration needed to reduce emissions and advance broader transformation across industries.

1 Net zero, as defined, is achieved when company's scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are reduced to a level that is consistent with a 1.5°C pathway, and any residual emissions are removed from the atmosphere through either nature-based or technological carbon removal solutions (e.g., forestry, regenerative agriculture, carbon capture technology), by no later than 2050, in alignment with the Paris Agreement.
