How Target Is Transforming Our Stores to Better Serve Guests

Target is ramping up the pace of its remodels this year, bringing our elevated shopping experience to more guests. It’s a bigger transformation for our stores than at any point in the past decade, with updated layouts that are easier to navigate and discover the best of Target’s style, design and value.

What's fueling this transformation? Our belief that our stores are the heart of Target and one of our biggest differentiators. They provide a stage for our differentiated offerings — including exclusive collaborations and only-at-Target items — and power our same-day fulfillment services.

That's why we’re investing approximately $5 billion this year toward 130-plus remodels and 30 new stores, as well as updates in technology and our supply chain. That includes 30 stores in 10 priority markets: Atlanta; Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Phoenix; Los Angeles; Miami, Fla.; Minneapolis; New York City; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C.

And the pace of our remodels will continue, as we invest in our stores to meet changing guest expectations.

“These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” says Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president, Target Properties. “We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today — from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments — while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.”

Elevating the guest experience

Each Target remodel is designed with guests in mind — for a more intuitive, inspiring and convenient shopping experience. In many locations, this includes:

  • An expanded dry grocery selection, as well as everyday essentials and pantry staples. Some locations will also get larger fresh and frozen food sections, making Target an even more convenient, one-stop destination.
  • Modern décor and fixtures and specialty LED lighting to create a shopping experience that is both hip and cool, warm and inviting, with new signage to navigate the store easily and quickly.
  • Engaging merchandise displays throughout the store — including in apparel and accessories, beauty and home — to highlight our elevated style.
  • Updated spaces and expanded services to support Order Pickup, Drive Up and Exchanges & Returns, along with updates to our traditional checkout and Express Self-Checkout lanes to improve their flow and convenience.
  • Modernized guest amenities including restrooms along with designated nursing spaces.
  • In select locations, Target is introducing natural refrigeration systems, more efficient lighting and HVAC systems that not only help reduce emissions but also energy costs.

This remodel effort is happening as we’re leveling up the assortment in key categories across the sales floor like health and wellness, beauty, baby, home and women’s style, with thoughtfully curated items in expanded, dedicated spaces.

Designed for how guests shop today

By enhancing our in-store experience, we’re also creating a more seamless connection between digital and physical — letting guests shop however they choose. With 76% of U.S. households within 10 miles of a Target store, our physical locations not only offer opportunities for guests to discover our exclusive, on-trend assortment. They also support our fast, flexible fulfillment services like Drive Up, Order Pickup and same-day and next-day shipping.

Ultimately, our stores are not just places to shop — they are critical infrastructure that powers speed, scale and long-term growth across the business. Case in point: Our remodeled stores typically see a low- to mid-single-digit sales lift, along with higher traffic and more guest engagement.

Together, Target’s investments in remodels and new stores reflect a long-term commitment to growth — one rooted in making everyday life that much more inspiring and convenient for busy families across the U.S.
