College Life Starts at Target in Logan, Utah

Logan is home to busy families, Utah State University (USU), nature lovers and now — Target.

This July, the community of 56,000 opened its arms to one of our newest stores. Before, residents would travel up to an hour to make a Target run. Now, it’s just a matter of pulling up to one of our Drive Up lanes or exploring the aisles to enjoy our elevated guest experience.

Anyone who works at Target in the community is a celebrity, because that’s how excited the community is for Target.

Logan has a youthful vibe, with a third of its population under 19 years of age. University students often move here after graduation, drawn by its friendly and fun spirit, the Bear River mountains and Logan Canyon.

With Target a back-to-college destination, that also made Logan a natural fit for our new store. USU students can shop stylish and design-forward options — from apparel and supplies to dorm rooms and everyday essentials — as they prep for the first day of classes. The store’s back-to-college move-in event this August will get them in the spirit with a DJ, mascot, giveaways and more. For big game days, students can also shop navy and white USU swag to show their spirit.

The store is a one-stop destination for their everyday life too, with an expanded food and beverage department (including study snacks, dorm drinks and easy meals) as well as an Apple at Target, CVS Pharmacy, Target Optical and Starbucks Cafe.

One stop to shop

Target’s 148,000-square-foot Logan store offers products and services that speak directly to local college students’ needs for an elevated guest experience.

Our Logan store is just one of more than 300 we are tracking to build by 2035, with each Target providing the next chapter of growth for our team; an easy, fast and friendly shopping destination for guests; and a supportive partner for the community.

A natural leader

Today, Katelyn leads a team of more than 170 team members in bringing the best and newest of Target to Logan. But her Target journey actually begins back in 2010, fresh out of high school, as a flow team member at our Valparaiso, Ind., store.

At the time, she had a different career in mind — as an elementary school teacher.

“Teaching has always come really natural to me,” she says. “I enjoy spending time with people and watching them grow.”

Through Target’s Dream to Be education assistance benefit, Katelyn was able to earn a bachelor’s degree while she worked and rose into new leadership roles. That’s when she discovered her passion for people and switched her major from education to human resources — and made it her Target focus, too.

Katelyn found her footing as a leader and made a natural transition from HR to store director. At Logan, many of the team members are new to Target or their role, giving her a chance to apply her teaching skills and experience, setting them up to deliver a better guest experience.

“I’m like a baseball coach of getting the right people on the right positions and then helping them be the best player that they can be within that role,” Katelyn says. “Then Target provides those guardrails of empowering them with the tools to be the best player that they can be within the team.”

From cradle to college

Katelyn is already setting up the next generation of leaders — like Savannah B.

Savannah was born and raised in Logan, with family ties that date back decades.

“Logan to me is this beautiful scenery and nature, the mountains, skiing and snowboarding. But Logan is also about family,” she says.

Last year, she graduated from USU. And now, she’s writing her next Logan chapter with Target as the specialty sales team lead, earning good pay and working alongside a great team. She also demonstrates how our Logan store is set up to serve every life milestone — whether guests are shopping for a new baby or prepping for their first day of school or college.

As a student, Savannah shopped at our Riverdale, Utah, store, for supplies and accessories to decorate her dorm room, including options from Hearth & Home by Magnolia and Threshold. The Logan store began stocking up for back-to-college season several weeks ahead of other Target stores so the next class of USU students can be ready for the return to class.

Coming together

“Every Target store is a little different. But the fun thing is we're all pretty much the same in the long run, too.”

One of Katelyn’s executive team leads once shared that observation with her. “That's the good thing about Target: The culture is so strong,” she says.

Each day, the team holds two huddles – meetings where they share priorities and noteworthy store updates. And each team huddle begins with recognition, true to Target’s culture of building strong connections and a sense of belonging. At Logan, this includes celebrating stand-out team members and highlighting what to build on for the week ahead, so every guest experience is easy, inspiring and friendly.

Even though Logan’s team is new, they’re already finding their roles and strengths. Chris H., executive team lead of general merchandise, often shares inspirational quotes to motivate the team. Ben D., general merchandise team lead, is the cheerleader — always ending the huddle with a "1, 2, 3, Logan!” cheer.

We all want to make sure we’re taking care of this community and deliver on what they’re needing right now — and that’s a one-stop shop retailer that’s friendly and delivers a great experience.

And although the store is new to Logan, our team is building connections there, too. This includes helping host Bingo at Legacy House of Logan, an assisted living home, and volunteering for USU’s food bank. They’re part of the one million volunteer hours team members across Target contribute each year.

The hour-long Target trips are over. Instead, there’s something more meaningful: a store powered by local team members, serving local families and students, and committed to strengthening our communities, fueling growth and opportunity for all. As Katelyn puts it, “We really do come together as a community.”
