We are proud of our team members’ commitment to making our communities a better place to live and work through a variety of efforts such as pro bono services, helping to address food insecurity, keeping communities safe and clean and many more ways that match team members’ interests and local needs.
Target team members continue their commitment to communities by donating nearly one million hours of volunteer service annually.*
* COVID-19 posed a unique challenge to in-person volunteering and, as such, we did not reach our 1 million hours goal in 2020. However, we were still able to contribute nearly 500,000 hours of volunteer service as team members embraced differentiated volunteer experiences that met real-time needs, such as serving as election judges, participating in our pop-up food and essential giveaway events in response to civil unrest, and a variety of virtual opportunities.
Our team is generous with their time no matter the location or time of year. There are a few programs, like pro bono, and moments in the year that our team really rallies around, such as Earth Month, National Volunteer Week, 9/11 Day of Service, our Annual Giving Campaign, Holiday and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
Pro bono
In 2020, Target launched pro bono consulting services for Black- and Indigenous-owned small businesses as well as other small businesses owned by people of color in the Twin Cities to help with rebuilding efforts following the murder of George Floyd. In less than one year, our team partnered with 40 small business clients and delivered over 10,000 hours of pro bono support.
During 2021, the program expanded to also include Atlanta, Chicago and the Bay Area, with 53 new clients. We plan to deliver at least 10,000 hours annually going forward.
Team member giving
Our team members have supported their communities through a giving campaign since 1962. In 2021, Target and individual team members donated more than $10 million, including over $1 million to our Team Member Giving Fund, which provides team members who are facing personal financial hardship with tax-free support. Team members also volunteered nearly 235,000 hours as part of our annual campaign.
Holiday
In 2022, nearly 1,900 Target stores and 44 supply chain facilities participated in the Great Giftogether, providing comfort and joy to families in their communities. Team members shopped for, wrapped and delivered gifts to nonprofit partners that were helping to spread holiday cheer.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Our team embraces the legacy of Dr. King through recognition of a day of service in January. In 2022, Target team members participated in nearly 90 service projects spread across the country. In addition, thousands joined in for a week of webinars that gave team members a chance to learn more about the life and legacy of Dr. King and how they can support a more equitable future for all.
