Inside Target's Next Chapter of Great Design for All

  • Sep 22, 2026

At Target, great design has always been about more than what something looks like. It's about making style and design accessible to everyone. For decades, that's come to life through iconic designer partnerships, thoughtful product innovation and the sense of discovery guests experience every time they walk through our doors.

Now, as we enter a new chapter of growth, we’re bringing fresh energy to that legacy and reconnecting with what has always defined us: a design-driven company rooted in style and value and guided by the needs of our guests.

That guest-first approach is also shaping how Target shows up as a brand. Recently, we introduced a new brand expression that puts people at the center, bringing more humanity, emotion and personality to the style and design guests love about Target. It comes to life in real moments, with more wit, playfulness and room for the unexpected — and will show up across the Target experience, from our stores and digital channels to marketing and more.

We’re putting guests at the center and using something as familiar as the Target bag to tell those stories in a fresh, joyful way.

Turning the Target bag inside out

That same guest-first approach carries into Inside Out, Target's new national brand campaign, which puts guests and the iconic red Target bag at the center of the story.

Inside Out explores the people, products and possibilities that come together through a Target run. Inspired by the idea that what guests bring home from Target can say something about who they are and what brings them joy, stylish vignettes pair products with distinct personalities and everyday moments, showing how design helps guests express themselves, create meaningful experiences and find joy in the everyday.

“Great design has always been about more than the products on our shelves. It’s about how Target fits into our guests’ lives and helps them express who they are,” said Scott Swartz, vice president of creative, Target. “With Inside Out, we’re putting guests at the center and using something as familiar as the Target bag to tell those stories in a fresh, joyful way.”

Set to RAYE’s “Joy,” the campaign is rolling out in phases, building from creator storytelling, culturally relevant audio and unexpected moments across New York City into fashion month and, ultimately, a national campaign spanning television, streaming, digital, social and audio.

Beyond advertising, Inside Out is being brought to life through creator partnerships, guest activations and experiential moments, including Red Bag Stories and Bagspotting later this month. Red Bag Stories will follow creators as they share what they carry in their Target bags for real-life moments, while Bagspotting will pop up in Boston and Chicago with playful street-style challenges and surprises for guests carrying their own Target bag. Together, these experiences invite guests into the campaign and make the red bag, and the stories it carries, their own.

For a limited time, Target will put reusable bags in the hands of guests across five cities and two college campuses, bringing the campaign to life beyond our stores and throughout their communities.

Designing a discovery-focused experience

The story behind Inside Out was also on display just days earlier through Target by Design, a two-day immersive presentation at New York City’s New Museum as a Retail Experience during New York Fashion Week. The experience celebrated more than 60 years of Target design across three distinct rooms:

The Archive

Design is our DNA. Target’s design history came to life through iconic work from Michael Graves, Stephen Sprouse and Isaac Mizrahi, along with milestones like the evolution of the Target cart and the redesign of the classic RX bottle, and our latest collaboration with Wrangler, bringing the brand’s women’s apparel to Target for the first time in a limited-time collection.

The Store

Designed for Discovery. The Target run was reimagined as an immersive world of discovery, with everyday products transformed into an art installation and seven Doors of Discovery bringing Style, Beauty, Home, Food, Wellness, Kids and Culture to life in unexpected ways. Custom Isaac Mizrahi dresses from Target’s new brand campaign added another moment of surprise.

The Bag

Designed By You. The iconic Target bag became a canvas for creativity, with one-of-one interpretations from established and emerging creative voices showing how a familiar object can be reimagined. Guests then joined in by customizing bags of their own.

Together, the three spaces moved guests from looking back at Target’s design legacy to experiencing and participating in what comes next.

An evolving legacy

From the immersive design worlds of Target by Design to the national launch of Inside Out, Target is building on a design legacy that spans generations while finding fresh ways to connect with today's guests.

Because while the products, partnerships and creative expressions may evolve, the idea at the heart of Target remains the same: great design should be for everyone.
