New store will bring about 200 jobs to the city

Target (NYSE:TGT) is excited to announce today the addition of a new Chicago store in an iconic landmark at South State Street and Madison Street East. The small-format store will be the first store in a U.S. Historic Landmark at the newly restored Carson Pirie Scott building, now known as Sullivan Center. The company also announced that its small-format locations across the U.S. will be named CityTarget, to include the store in Chicago.

“I applaud Target for bringing this urban store concept to Chicago, as well as the new jobs and economic opportunity this store will create,” said Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. “Target will be an important addition to State Street, one of Chicago’s most important retail centers, and will be located in one of the city’s most architecturally significant buildings.”

Whether they be commuters, tourists or urban dwellers, CityTarget will offer guests the convenience of one-stop shopping with affordable fresh food, apartment essentials, on-trend fashions and exclusive designer collections. The store will open in 2012 and create about 200 jobs locally. Target currently has 10 other stores in the City of Chicago.

“Target is honored to open a CityTarget on State Street,” said John Griffith, executive vice president, Property Development, Target. “We look forward to preserving this Chicago treasure and blending in with the building’s aesthetic. A hallmark of Target is our flexibility in store design, which allows us to bring high-quality products at great values to our urban guests.”

Target has been a proud member of the Chicago community since 1993, creating strong partnerships with community organizations through Target’s community giving programs. In fact, to recognize this important announcement and pay tribute to Black History Month, Target today will donate 17,000 books to students at 31 local K-8 Chicago schools. Every child will receive a book to take home, a bookmark and a Target book bag. The books commemorate the contribution of influential African Americans throughout history, including President Barack Obama, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. Target is also awarding each school a $1,000 book grant to purchase books for their own school libraries. These efforts reflect Target’s commitment to education and reading and the company’s plans to donate $1 billion in education-related giving by the end of 2015.

To date, Target has donated more than $2 million to schools in the city of Chicago through our Take Charge of Education program.
