For more than 50 years, Target has been a staple of the downtown Minneapolis business community. Realizing the importance of a strong central business district, Target has grown into one of downtown’s largest employers and is a consistent supporter of its community.

We work with our team and partners across sectors to engage in local conversations to gauge where we can drive and contribute to meaningful change.

Community giving has always been a cornerstone of our company. It’s why since 1946 Target has given 5 percent of our profit, which today totals millions of dollars a week, to communities in which our guests and team members live, learn, work and play.

Through innovative programs, team member volunteerism, and strong partnerships, Target demonstrates a commitment to giving and philanthropy. In 2019 Target gave over $28 million in cash grants and product donations in the Twin Cities, and team members volunteered more than 262,000 hours in the community.

Target Field opening in 2010 helped increase development on the west side of downtown, and the current renovations to Target Center will add to the sports and entertainment scene in the Warehouse District. Target supported the establishment of the Minneapolis Central Library, building the new Vikings stadium in downtown, the revitalization of Nicollet Mall and many other projects that align with the Intersections: The Downtown 2025 Plan’s goals.

We’re proud to support the inspiring work of the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) and its partner organizations to ensure children and families are prepared for the workforce and to reach their full potential.

NAZ, a collaborative of nonprofits and schools, was founded in 2010 to address permanently closing the achievement gap and putting children on the path to college, while ending multi-generational poverty in North Minneapolis. The idea behind NAZ is that a child’s academic success is also dependent on what happens outside the classroom, such as their family life, housing and health.

In 2015, Target pledged $3 million over three years to NAZ with the goal of closing the achievement gap between students of color and their white classmates. The commitment will fund core elements of NAZ, including parent education courses, academic coaching for kids, “expanded learning” courses after school and during the summer, as well as health and wellness initiatives.
