As Target progresses through our new chapter of growth, we're investing in the store team member experience in ways that strengthen the guest experience and our business. That includes creating the conditions for these teams to do their best work, equipping leaders to coach and develop their teams, and deploying modern tools and simpler routines to give team members more time to focus on what matters most – ensuring every Target run is easy, inspiring and friendly.

Shaping what great store performance looks like

These three new standards define what a great Target store experience should feel like to our guests – every hour, every day, every store.

Easy: Zoned, in stock, clean and fast

Create a shopping experience where products are well-stocked and the store is clean and organized. Guests can quickly find what they need, easily connect with a team member for support, and complete their trip with a fast, seamless checkout.

Inspiring: Visual presentation and interactions

Bring our product assortments, displays and presentations to life through a team that takes pride in their work and actively engages with guests. Team member-led events make Target a special and irresistible place to shop, inspiring guests to explore, add to their basket, and keep coming back.

Friendly: Greet, help, thank

Ensure every guest feels welcomed, supported, and valued through interactions that are warm, helpful, and end with genuine appreciation.

Store team members

All Target store team members completed additional training this year focused on these standards and practical ways to improve each guest interaction, including:

  • What it means to deliver an easy, inspiring and friendly experience across the store and in everyday moments
  • How simple behaviors, from welcoming guests to offering help, influence culture and results
  • How leaders can reinforce expectations through coaching, recognition and follow-up

This common language and investment in training have helped store team members build skills and confidence by directly connecting their actions to the guest experience. Target is already seeing encouraging progress, with guest satisfaction metrics reaching three-year highs in the first quarter of this year.

Putting more payroll where guests need it most

A better guest experience depends on having consistent team member support in all the moments and areas guests count on. That’s why Target has invested hundreds of millions of dollars this year in additional payroll to improve store coverage, execution and guest-facing services. By distributing payroll more strategically across stores, Target is giving teams more time and support to welcome guests, keep shelves full and stores clean.

We’re also testing new staffing levels for categories that are more frequent or interactive for our guests — like Food and Beverage, Apparel and Accessories, and Target Beauty Studio. The goal is to dedicate more team members to the right areas at the right time to help answer questions and ensure inspiring product presentation.

Giving leaders clearer tools to coach and improve

Great store performance also depends on leaders who can coach teams and respond quickly to what guests see and need in stores. Starting this summer, store and field leaders now have a clearer and more comprehensive view of team performance to help recognize strong work, identify where support is needed, and develop team members with greater consistency.

By bringing insights together — putting assessments, attendance and documented performance conversations into one place — we’re helping leaders holistically build the behaviors that create a stronger team and better guest experience.

Making team members easier for guests to find

Guests need to be able to quickly spot our team, and team members should feel confident and comfortable showing up as part of Team Target. With that in mind, we’ve updated our Team Colors guidelines to create a more cohesive and recognizable store environment. Under the updated guidelines, team members wear a sleeved red top or vest, blue denim or khaki bottoms and minimal non-Target logos.

To support store team members in showing up guest-ready every day, Target offers our team:

  • Collection186, a curated and expanded assortment of red apparel from Target-owned brands that they can purchase, including a new design-forward line inspired by Isaac Mizrahi, Target’s creative director at large
  • An additional 20% discount on adult apparel and accessories from owned brands
  • A free red shirt and a one-time coupon for 50% off owned-brand denim for all current team members and new hires

More time to serve guests

We’re simplifying the everyday systems that keep stores running smoothly, from task management to scheduling and attendance, so teams have more time, clarity and support to serve guests well.

Making daily work easier

New intelligence and capabilities in myDay — our store operations app — help teams see, prioritize and complete work faster. By turning real-time store information into clearer task priorities, these updates help team members spend less time heads-down navigating work and more time on the floor available to guests.

A new streamlined view also gives leaders more organized visibility into what work needs attention first so they can make faster choices in service to the guest experience.

One place to manage schedules, time and attendance

We recently introduced new workforce technology to make store coverage more reliable by bringing scheduling, self-service and attendance into one easy-to-use system for team members and leaders. This update will create more predictable schedules and coverage, giving team members better visibility into their daily hours and helping stores steadily show up for guests.

The new tools include:

  • Self-service mobile app: A one-stop shop for team members to check schedules, swap shifts, request time off and update availability in real time.
  • Scheduling platform: A shared tool for team members and leaders to build, manage and view schedules that account for individual preferences and business needs.
  • Attendance program: An industry-standard attendance policy and tracking hub with clear and consistent expectations across locations and roles.

More reliable scheduling and attendance help stores maintain the coverage guests expect while giving teams a clearer, more consistent work experience.
