Every time we open our doors, we continue a commitment that’s been growing since 1946: a brighter future for our team members, our communities and the world we live in.

Supporting communities through giving has always been a cornerstone of our business and a belief that guides so many of our decisions. Each year, we’ve given 5 percent of our profit to communities, which adds up to more than $4 million each week. We also believe that donating our time, talent and resources is equally important as the income we give. Our team members give hundreds of thousands of hours volunteering in their communities every year.

In order to build the strong, healthy and safe communities we want for our team members and guests, we work closely with partners and organizations. In fact, we've challenged ourselves to meet corporate responsibility goals in the areas of education, sustainability, team member well-being and volunteerism. These goals will be our road map in the years to come.

Since opening our first store in 1962, we’ve invested in the health and sustainability of our communities. Today, we continue to integrate sustainable practices across our business with an eye on using our resources responsibly and maintaining the health of our communities. Here is one story of how we became the first major retailer to sell direct trade coffee.

We’re devoted to helping our team members throughout the world live well and achieve their goals, knowing that their diverse perspectives, talents and commitment make both our company and our communities the best they can be. We support team members’ paths to health and well-being through resources, services and benefits programs for eligible team members, spouses, domestic partners and other dependents. And we develop leaders and invest in team members’ futures through career development and networking opportunities.

We believe every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, and our guests tell us they agree. In fact, education is their top social concern. Because our guests’ concerns are important to us, and because we know that our future success, and that of the global economy, depends on an educated workforce, we strive to help kids do well in school.

While we support programs and activities that benefit education at all levels, studies show that third grade is a turning point where kids transition from learning to read to reading to learn. So we focus our efforts on programs that help get students reading proficiently by the end of third grade and on a path to graduation.
