We Just Completed Our *1000th* Store Remodel — Here’s a Look at What We’ve Learned and How It’s Informing Our Future Store Designs

For years, Team Target has reimagined the ways we serve our guests through innovative remodels that create further ease and spark inspiration for our guests. And today, we’re proud to share we’ve reached a major milestone in that strategy, as we put the finishing touches on our 1,000th remodel, featuring our latest in store design. This stores-first strategy is continuing to pay off and help Target grow — from a 2-4% sales bump in our updated stores in the first year post-remodel, to increased love and loyalty from new and existing guests.

Each of these 1,000 updated locations are an investment not only in our communities across the country, but in our team, too, helping them more easily deliver an elevated experience for our guests. And we’re not stopping here: In fact, this year’s remodel program will be our most ambitious yet, with nearly 200 full-store remodels planned through 2022. We’re also undertaking almost 200 fulfillment remodels, which specifically focus on building capacity for our same-day services like Order Pickup and Drive Up to create an even easier experience for our guests and team members. And we’ll bring it all to life with our signature Tarzhay magic, while leveraging the insights and learnings we’ve gleaned from the last 1,000 renovations. Here’s a closer look:

Warm and welcoming

At Target, we want all guests to feel welcomed and inspired, and through our remodels, we’ve not only created warmth in our spaces through elements like wood, wood tones and specialty lighting, but we’ve made changes to the marketing guests see throughout the stores, too. Our goal: ensure our signage better reflects the community around it so our guests feel represented and welcomed whenever — and however — they shop with us.

Mixing it up

When we remodel a store, it’s all about balance. We’ve learned that if renovation layouts are similar to the original, our guests can easily find their favorite items. So, we keep key store categories in the same place so guests can more quickly get accustomed to their renovated store’s layout. And by keeping our renovation timelines short and limiting disruptions, we’re seeing more frequent trips to our stores from our existing guests, who tell us they love the updates and the new brands and products they’ve discovered.

So much more in store

Alongside our full-store renovations, we’ve added our shop-in-shop experiences like Ulta Beauty, Disney and Apple to select stores across our chain. We’re also adding Starbucks at select stores across our chain — they’re already in more than 1,700 locations — so guests can enjoy their favorite beverage while they browse. And on top of adding ease and inspiration, we’re keeping the planet in mind, too. We’ve made smart shifts to aspects of the store as part of our Target Forward goals, including switching each of our stores over to natural refrigerants by 2040, helping to lower our emissions across our business. And we’re building on our 150 locations that currently offer electrical vehicle charging stations for our guests with additional installs at select stores across the country.

At your service

To support the rising popularity of our same-day services and create more ease for our guests, we’ve begun adding extra space through fulfillment remodels chainwide. (We’ll do almost 200 of these renovations this year, with half of our projects already underway.) And at another nearly 200 select stores, we’ll add Drive Up canopies that improve safety and better protect our team members and guests from the elements. We know that when guests use our same-day services, they’re more likely to shop Target more often, and our investment in these areas is just another way we’re putting our guests’ needs first.
