Our secret to fast, affordable delivery? Our stores. On top of providing the easy, inspiring, only-at-Target shopping experience our guests love, they also fulfill more than 95% of Target’s online orders. And as we look to strengthen our delivery capabilities for the future, we’re expanding our first-of-its-kind sortation center concept to help our stores do even more, faster, for our guests. Starting this fall, we’ll open four new sortation centers in major markets across the country — including sites in Houston, Dallas, the Philadelphia area and Lawrenceville, Georgia, all built after the pilot sortation center we opened in Minneapolis in 2020.

What’s a sortation center?

These sites enable our teams to quickly sort the millions of packages our stores teams ship every day. Take a look:

Delivering joy faster

When you place an order on Target.com, our stores teams get to work, quickly picking and packing shipments, then sorting them for our delivery partners like Shipt to deliver to your doorstep. Our sortation centers make this process even faster, retrieving packages as soon as our store teams are finished packing and sorting, batching and routing them for delivery to local neighborhoods. By removing the sorting process from our backrooms, we save valuable time and space for our store teams to fulfill additional orders, and because our sortation center technology pre-sorts and arranges packages for easy pickup, it reduces processing time for our delivery partners, too. The result: more efficiency in our shipping processes and even faster delivery for our guests.

Building for the future

These new sites are just one piece of our $4-billion annual investment in capabilities that power the services and experiences our guests love. They’ll build on the success of our Minneapolis pilot sortation center, which opened in 2020 and has already delivered millions of packages to local guests. As always, it’s all about delivering joy to our guests — making sure you can get what you need, when you need it, how you want it, now and for years to come.
