At Target, we’re always listening to our guests so we can deliver a joyful and convenient shopping experience. Checking out is one of the most important moments of the Target run, and we know that a fast, easy experience — whether at self-checkout or the lanes staffed by our friendly team members — is critical to getting guests on their way quickly.
In March 2024, we debuted Express Self-Checkout with limits of 10 items or fewer at most of our nearly 2,000 stores nationwide to give guests an easy and convenient option for a quick trip — with our traditional, staffed lanes available for when their cart is full. About a year later, Express Self-Checkout has been a great success and addition to our offer, with both our guests and team members seeing the benefits:
- Total transaction times have improved nearly 8% across both our self-checkout stations and our traditional, staffed lanes.
- Guests taking advantage of both options are reporting better checkout experiences overall in terms of wait times and interactions with our team members. According to the Net Promoter Score (NPS) for checkout — a measure of customer experience — we’ve seen a 5-point improvement in our already high score for wait times and 3-point improvement in interaction.
- A greater share of guests are choosing to make their purchase through our traditional lanes staffed by our team members — the perfect option for anyone who has more in their Target carts, needs a helping hand, or just enjoys connecting with our team to help them get on their way sooner.
We’ll continue evolving to match guests with the right checkout options so they can get what they need — alongside same-day fulfillment services like Drive Up, Order Pick Up and Target’s same-day delivery. It’s all in service to demonstrate the convenience, joy and value of the Target run.
