In a letter to team members, guests and the community, Target CEO Brian Cornell announced several measures to support the Minneapolis-St. Paul community in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, including:
- Providing immediate first aid, food and basic essentials to the community
- Support for team members at closed stores
- Committing to rebuilding and reopening the Lake Street Target store, as well as any other impacted Target stores
- Engagement with community leaders to support local families as the community heals
Immediate Aid
To ensure community members within the areas of heaviest damage and demonstration have access to basic first aid, water and essentials, Target is providing goods through partnerships with local nonprofits, including bottled water, food, baby formula, diapers, dry goods, common first aid supplies and medicine. Target also is working with Hands On Twin Cities to bring together Target volunteers to support immediate recovery efforts. Target will assist small businesses in their efforts to rebuild through our philanthropic commitments. Re-Opening to Serve the Community
Target will prioritize the rebuilding and reopening of its store located at 2500 E. Lake Street, preserving approximately 200 local jobs. The timing of construction will be determined in the coming weeks, with the goal of opening in late 2020. Target will also reopen other damaged stores in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in the coming weeks. Team members impacted by store closures will be paid for up to 14 days of scheduled hours during store closures, including COVID-19 premium pay. They also will be able to work at other nearby Target locations.
Long-Term Community Support
Target leaders are assembling community members, partners and officials to learn how the company can support the community as it heals. The focus of the sessions will be on family needs across the community moving forward. The conversations will focus on shaping and co-creating the long-term commitment and actions Target takes on behalf of the Minneapolis-St. Paul community. Additionally, Target has signed the Children’s Minnesota CEO joint statement.
