  • MINNEAPOLIS
Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) is building a new food distribution center outside Columbus, Ohio, that will serve about 350 Target stores in 10 states.

The new food distribution center in West Jefferson, Ohio, will open in 2014 and handle produce as well as refrigerated, frozen and packaged foods. The new center will create about 250 construction jobs and 100 to 150 permanent jobs. Construction of the 450,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is to begin this spring.

“This new food distribution center will help ensure that we’re delivering the best possible quality and value in groceries for Target guests in Ohio and nearby states,” says Mitch Stover, senior vice president of distribution at Target. “We have been in West Jefferson since 2004 with our regional distribution center, and we’re excited to soon be operating two facilities there. We know West Jefferson is a great community to do business in, and we’re confident this will be a terrific location for our expanding grocery business.”

Target has added fresh foods to more than 800 general merchandise stores nationwide over the last three years, and by the end of 2012 the expanded fresh food layout will be in about 1,100 stores – about 60 percent of all store locations.

In addition to a selection of fresh produce, fresh packaged meat and pre-packaged baked goods, Target’s expanded fresh food layout offers guests the everyday essentials and exclusive brands they have come to expect from Target.

Target currently operates 37 distribution centers in the U.S., including four food distribution centers in: Cedar Falls, Iowa; Phoenix, Ariz.; Lake City, Fla.; and Fort Worth, Texas. A new Target food distribution center is being built in Denton, Texas, that opens in spring 2013.

The new West Jefferson food distribution center will be located at 42 Commerce Parkway, near Interstate 70 and State Highway 29, and adjacent to Target’s regional distribution center. The new facility will serve Target stores in Ohio and the following nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
