14th-Place Finish for the Target Team at Kentucky

MINNEAPOLIS - June 30, 2012
Results (starting pos.) from the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky
1.      (8)  Brad Keselowski, No. 2 Dodge
14.    (31) Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Target Chevrolet
15.    (17) Jamie McMurray, No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet

The Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway proved to be an eventful weekend for the No. 42 Target team. Under record heat, the team endured an early incident in the opening laps of practice, a qualifying run during a wind storm and some handling concerns during the race to rebound with a 14th-place finish.

Temperatures soared to over 100 degrees over the weekend but that did not deter the Target team from making a solid run at Kentucky Speedway. Juan Pablo Montoya started in the 31st position and radioed in some handling concerns almost immediately. Changing track conditions made for a finicky race car and the Target team made a total of six pit stops to work on the No. 42 Chevy. Montoya reported that the handling was much better during the second half of the race and with some pit strategy, the Target team made a run to the front. In the closing laps, the No. 42 was displayed in the top-15 and battled it out until the end to be credited with a 14tth-place finish.

"What a crazy weekend,” Montoya stated. “I’m so proud of this Target team. They never gave up after everything we went through. I thought we had a 30th-place car when we started out and they worked to get the handling to where it needed to be. I’m happy with 14th. We’ll take it and move on to Daytona next week.”

Notes:
-    Montoya advanced 17 positions Saturday evening to finish in 14th
-    Record heat hit the Sparta, Ky area over the weekend as temperatures hit 100+ at the race track
-    This marked the second NSCS race run at Kentucky Speedway
-    Montoya advanced one position to 21st in the point standings; 120 out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup

Teams will head back to Daytona Beach, Fla. next weekend for the third superspeedway race of the 2012 season. The Coke Zero 400 will air on TNT and MRN radio on Saturday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
