The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returned to superspeedway racing over the weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. Big pack racing returned and so did the unpredictability. Juan Pablo Montoya started in the 12th position and managed to stay out of any on-track incidents until lap142 when he got tangled up in an incident in front of him. The Target Chevrolet sustained significant damage and the team had to settle for a 32nd-place finish.

The weekend was filled with the unexpected as teams battled the heat on Saturday, a rainy race day morning and then a crazy 194-lap on the NASCAR circuit’s largest track. Montoya started the Aaron’s 499 in the 12th position and quickly dropped to the back of the field to avoid any on-track incidents early on. The Target Chevrolet strategically stayed back until just before the halfway point. Montoya joined the lead pack jockeying for position and even leading the field to the start/finish line for three laps. With 45 laps to go, the unpredictable Talladega would live up to its name as Montoya would be caught up in the “Big One”. An accident in front of him left him with nowhere to go and caused significant damage to the Target Chevrolet. The day would end early for the team and result in a 32nd-place finish.

“We tried to stay out of trouble all day and then something like this happens,” Montoya remarked post-race. “Our Target Chevy was fast and I was just driving along when someone ran out of gas and a chain reaction happened. I had nowhere to go. That’s superspeedway racing for you. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Notes:
-       Montoya was involved in an on-track incident on lap 143 and had to end his day early.
-       Montoya led several laps before having to take the No. 42 Target Chevrolet to the garage. This was his second DNF of the season (Daytona)
-       Montoya dropped one position in the point standings to 17th, 50 points out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup

Up next on the schedule is the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The race will air live on FOX and radio stations affiliated with MRN on Saturday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
