Target Team Grabs Their First Top-10 of the Season

Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team visited the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” over the weekend. The No. 42 started from the 30th position, overcame some handling concerns and drove to the front to finish in the 10th position. This marks the first top-10 of the 2012 season for the Target team. The strong performance moved Montoya up six positions in the point standings to 18th.

Montoya lined-up towards the back of the field for Sunday’s Food City 500. The Target Chevrolet stayed mid-field for the first half of the race and the crew made multiple stops throughout the 500-lap event to help with some handling concerns. With less than 150 laps remaining, Montoya broke into the top-10 and flirted with that position for the remainder of the day. One final caution came out with 21 laps left in the race that allowed Montoya to come down for fresh tires, fuel and more adjustments. On the restart, the No. 42 Target Chevrolet started in the 11th position and advanced three positions before the checkered flag waved.

The eighth-place finish is the first top-10 finish for the Target team since the fall race in New Hampshire. Teammate Jamie McMurray posted a top-10 finish also and placed his McDonald’s Chevrolet in the seventh position. Bristol marked the first time since the spring Martinsville race that both Earnhardt Ganassi Racing cars have finished in the top-10 in the same race.

“What a great run for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates today,” Montoya remarked.  “To have both cars finish in the top-10 says a lot about how hard these guys are working to pull this program together. That caution at the end was a huge help to us and we were able to drive the Target Chevrolet to the front.”
