Montoya and McMurray Finish 10th and 16th in the Kick-Off Race of the 2012 Season

The first race of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season did not lack in excitement for the fans or 25 competitors that took the green flag in the 34th running of the Budweiser Shootout At Daytona.  The race was slowed by caution five times for 22 laps.  There were 26 lead changes among 13 different drivers.

Juan Pablo Montoya drew the last qualifying spot at the Budweiser draw party Friday night. The Target Chevrolet lined-up in the 25th position and was running mid-field when the first on-track incident of the night occurred. Montoya sustained some damage to the rear of the car but with two quick stops on pit road for repairs, the No. 42 was able to return and get back into the mix. Montoya would go on to lead a lap and manage to stay away from any further incidents. When the checkered flag waved, the Target Chevrolet found itself in the 10th position.

Jamie McMurray drew the fourth starting position for the shootout under the lights. McMurray would quickly become a top contender as the No. 1 Bass pro Shops Chevrolet was leading the field by lap 4. He would go on to lead 11 laps over the course of the 75-lap race. With one lap remaining, the on-track action became chaotic and McMurray found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. The No. 1 was forced up the track and received significant damage causing the team to end the night one lap short. McMurray was credited with the 16th position at the close of the race.

Next up on the Daytona Speedweeks schedule for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be the Gatorade Dual 150 qualifying races on Thurs, Feb. 23 at 2:00 pm (ET); the event will be televised on FOX, and MRN Radio affiliates.
