Target Team Endures Highs and Lows at the “Monster Mile” to Finish 22nd
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returned to the “Monster Mile” over the weekend where Montoya and the Target team looked to break their streak of bad luck on the concrete oval. The No. 42 Target Chevrolet started in the 24th position and ran as high as seventh and as low as 38th before crossing the finish line in the 22nd position.
Juan Pablo Montoya made his 10th start at Dover International Speedway on Sunday. The Target Chevrolet lined-up 24th under cool, windy conditions which was in stark contrast to the practice and qualifying conditions the days before. As the green flag waved, Montoya noticed the handling was off due to the difference in track temperatures. The team worked on the handling throughout the day with a total of nine pit stops for tires, fuel and adjustments. The weather and pit strategy again came into play as teams endured two caution flags for rain and then long green flag runs at the end. In the closing laps, Montoya and another car collided while fighting for position and the No. 42 brushed the wall. The Target Chevrolet stayed out on track and rode it out to the end giving the team a 22nd place finish.
“It wasn’t the finish we had hoped for but we’ll learn from it and move on,” Montoya stated. “Dover is one of those tracks I love to race at but we just haven’t had the results to show it.”
- Montoya has two poles, two top-five and eight top-10 finishes this season
- Montoya has the highest number of laps run this season out of any driver with 8406
- Montoya sits 19th in the point standings
- Montoya has no DNF’s in 2011
The Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway is up next. The race will air on ESPN and radio stations affiliated with MRN on Sunday, October 9 at 2 pm ET.
