Target Team Produces Another Top-15 Run at Chicagoland Speedway
JOILET, Ill. (September 19, 2011) – Teams entered Chicagoland Speedway for the first Chase race of the 2011 season. Once again, Mother Nature had other plans in mind for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as rain fell on the track all day Sunday and postponed the Geico 400 until Monday. The No. 42 Chevrolet started in the 16th position and overcame handling issues to bring home a solid top-15 finish for the Target team.
Preparation for the Geico 400 got underway Friday afternoon with two practice sessions and then qualifying on Saturday. The Target Chevrolet ran the 16th quickest time out of 47 cars. Crews woke up Sunday morning to rain which continued throughout the day forcing NASCAR to postpone the race until Monday.
When the green flag waved, drivers began to report handling problems with their race cars almost immediately due to the track conditions. The Target crew made six stops throughout the race for tires, fuel and major adjustments to help improve the handling on the Target Chevrolet. Montoya maintained track position and stayed in the top-20 for the majority of the race. The Target team would gain significant momentum as the laps wound down. Montoya came back from a lap down and saved on fuel to gain seven positions in the closing laps and cross the finish line in the 14th position on the lead lap.
“I’m very happy with how things turned out,” Montoya remarked. “I know it’s not a win but we overcame handling problems and falling a lap down to finish in the top-15. The Target team never gave up today.”
- Montoya has two poles, two top-five and seven top-10 finishes this season
- Montoya has finished in the top-15 the last three races
- Montoya has the highest number of laps run this season with 7708 of 7743
- Montoya sits 19th in the point standings
- Montoya has no DNF’s in 2011
The Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway is up next. The race will air on ESPN and radio stations affiliated with PRN on Sunday, September 25 at 2 pm ET.
