Target Team Comes Home with a 17th-Place Finish in Kansas

MINNEAPOLIS - June 5, 2011
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series headed out to Kansas over the weekend for the first of two races slated at the mile-and-a-half track this season. The Target team endured many highs and lows during the 267-lap event and would eventually cross the finish line in the 17th position.
Juan Pablo Montoya qualified the No. 42 Target Chevrolet on the outside pole for Sunday’s STP 400. When the green flag dropped, Montoya pulled to the front and led the first lap of the race. He would lead a total of 10 laps throughout the day. As the track temperatures rose, the handling of the No. 42 became a concern. The Target crew worked to make the proper adjustments and played on fuel strategy to get Montoya back up in the front. With 20 laps remaining the Target Chevrolet was displayed back up in the top-10. The run up front would be cut short on the final lap as Montoya radioed in that the car had run out of fuel. The Target Chevrolet coasted across the finish to be credited with the 17th position.
“I feel like we’re heading in the right direction with our cars,” Montoya remarked. “We just can’t seem to catch a break though. I thought our strategy was going to pay off in the end and we fell a little short. It’s disappointing but what can you do.”
Montoya is tied with Mark Martin for the 14th position in the point standings after Kansas. He sits 25 points out of 10th.
- Montoya has two poles, two top-five and four top-10 finishes out of 13 races this season
- Montoya currently sits 14th in the point standings; 25 points out of 10th
- Montoya has started on the front row three times this season
- Montoya has completed 4317 out of the possible 4348 laps; 99.3%
Next up on the schedule is the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, June 12. The race will air live on TNT and radio stations affiliated with MRN at 1:00 pm ET.
