Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team’s top-10 streak continued at Richmond International Raceway Saturday evening. Montoya placed the No. 42 Target Chevrolet on the front row for the Air Guard 400, ran all but five laps in the top-10, led three laps and finished in the seventh position. The strong performance marked the fifth consecutive top-10 finish for the team and 13 total top-10 finishes this season. Crew chief Brian Pattie was also presented with the DIRECTV Crew Chief of the Race award.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series headed to Richmond International Raceway over the weekend for some short track racing under the lights. The Target team was seeking to keep their momentum going and appeared to be on track to do just that with two top-five practice sessions followed by a second place starting position for the race.
Saturday evening the green flag dropped for 400-laps around the .75-mile facility. Montoya lined-up on the front row and would become a permanent fixture in the top-10 during the race. The Target team pitted a total of four times for fresh tires, fuel and adjustments to help alleviate a loose in handling condition. Montoya led three laps and would only fall out of the top-10 for a total of five laps throughout the evening. When the checkered flag waved, the No. 42 Target Chevrolet was credited with seventh place. The Target team now has 13 top-10 finishes this season out of 26 races which accounts for 50% of their finishes.
"It was a good night,” remarked Montoya. “Good pit stops. Good calls in the pits. The Target Chevrolet was good on the short runs but we were killing the rear tires on the long runs. It was a good night though.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule is winding down with only 10 races remaining this season. Next up on the schedule is the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The race will air live on ESPN and radio stations affiliated with PRN on Sunday, September 19th at 1:00 pm (ET).
