Team Target earned two top-10 finishes at Kentucky Speedway in Round 15 of the IZOD IndyCar Series Saturday night with Dario Franchitti placing fifth and Scott Dixon finishing seventh.
Franchitti lined-up 11th on the grid and made his way to the top-five by just lap 62. After fuel mileage called for a late race pit-stop on Lap 196, he would come out of the pits in the fifth position where he would ultimately finish.
Dixon started from the fourth position and ran in the top-three for the majority of the event. The turning point for the team came during a green flag pit-stop on lap 154, where the Target team dropped from third to 10th due to trouble in the pits. They would re-group to finish seventh.
- In the last four races, Franchitti has outscored championship leader Will Power 165 points to 132 points.
- Franchitti’s fifth-place finish marks his seventh consecutive top-five finish.
- It is Dixon’s 13th top-10 finish of the 2010 season.
- The seventh-place finish marked Dixon’s sixth top-10 finish in eight races at Kentucky.
With the finish, Franchitti remains second in the championship with 535 points, gaining six points on leader Will Power (just 17 points out of the top spot). Dixon remains third in the championship with 469 points, 83 points out of the top spot.
Up next for Team Target is Round 16 of the IZOD IndyCar Series at Twin Ring Motegi for the Indy Japan 300, September 18 (10:30 p.m. ET on VERSUS).
Dario Franchitti: "From where we were after the first lap to where we finished the night, it was an exciting race. We marched our way from 14th to third, I guess. We were hovering around the front. We were second, running behind Dan (Wheldon), but Helio (Castroneves) had the fuel to go to the end and we did not. We finished ahead of Will (Power) which was one of the things we needed to achieve, but it would have been nice to have finished a little further up. I enjoyed racing with Tony (Kanaan) up front and we were working well together. Everybody was fighting for grip and sliding around a little. It was not a bad night."
