Montoya Wins at Watkins Glen in Dominating Fashion
Juan Pablo Montoya brought his No. 42 Target Chip Ganassi Chevrolet into victory lane at Watkins Glen International after leading 74 of the 90 laps in Sunday's Sprint Cup Series Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen. The win marks the first NASCAR win for Montoya’s sponsor Target and Montoya’s second career win in the Sprint Cup Series.
Montoya and the Target team started the race Sunday in the third position and quickly maneuvered their way to the lead by lap six of the 90-lap event. The No. 42 Chevrolet remained in the top-five for the entire race and only gave up the lead a total of 16 laps throughout the afternoon. Eight of the laps were led by his biggest challenger of the day, Marcos Ambrose. Ambrose lost the handling of his race car on the final restart and Montoya drove away from the field in the closing laps. When the Target Chevrolet crossed the finish line, Montoya had a five second lead over second place.
Montoya ran a flawless race and was able to end a 113-race winless streak. The race win was a first for Target in NASCAR and for crew chief Brian Pattie in the Sprint Cup Series. The weekend also marked a first for sponsor Target as they won two races in two different series on the same day as Dario Franchitti drove his No. 10 Target IndyCar to victory in Mid-Ohio later that afternoon.
“This win is awesome for Target and for us as a team,” remarked Montoya. “We had a great car. We worked really hard all day. When (Marcos) Ambrose passed me, I was ok. I was really saving the brakes. The last two years here, we never had a shot at winning because I was always out of brakes. This time, we played it really smart and when it was time to go, we had the car.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads back to the Irish Hills of Michigan this weekend for the Carfax 400. The race will air live on ESPN on Sunday, August 15 at 1:00 pm (ET).
