Top-10 Run for Team Target in the Irish Hills of Michigan
Juan Pablo Montoya and Team Target had another solid finish in the Irish Hills of Michigan over the weekend. The No. 42 qualified in the fifth position and ran in the top-15 the majority of the 200-lap event. In the closing laps pit strategy came into play and Montoya found himself in position for a top-10 finish. The Target Chevrolet crossed the finish line in the seventh position and gave the team their 10th top-10 finish of the season.
Coming off a win in Watkins Glen, Team Target looked to continue the momentum and bring home their first oval track win. Montoya was strong in all three practice sessions and placed the No. 42 Chevrolet in the top-five for qualifying for the fourth straight week. Starting from the fifth position, Montoya kept pace with the field and ran in the top-10 until some handling concerns caused the Target car to fall back in the field a bit. Crew chief Brian Pattie brought the No. 42 down pit road seven times for adjustments, tires and fuel. A fuel only stop on lap 156 put Montoya back into contention for a top finish and the No. 42 battled it out for position until the close of the race. When the checkered flag flew, the Target Chevrolet was credited with the seventh-place position.
“We needed another good run and the guys worked hard all day to get me a good handling race car,” stated Montoya. “We were having some issues with the right rear tire sliding all afternoon but towards the end the Target Chevrolet was fast. We would have had a top-five finish if it weren’t for a battle with the No. 16, No. 17 and No. 99 cars there at the end.”
