Montoya Gets Caught up in the “Big One” at Daytona
Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team led 11 laps and looked to be on their way for a repeat top-10 performance at Daytona International Speedway until a 20-car pile-up collected the 42 team. The damage sent them to the garage early and Montoya had to settle for a 27th-place finish when the checkered flag flew.
Rain showers moved through the area for Friday’s qualifying session so the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series lined-up for Saturday nights race by owners points. Montoya started from the 22nd position and worked his way through the field to the top-five by lap 34. The Target Chevrolet would go on to lead a total of 11 lap’s three different times and run up in the top-10 for the majority of the 160 lap event. On lap 148 the outcome of the race would change drastically, 20 cars would be collected on the backstretch including the No. 42. The Target Chevrolet sustained serious damage in the “big one” and was pushed back to the garage 12 laps shy of finishing the race.
"I saw cars piling up in front of me. I tried to get down on the track and clipped with the right front corner on someone,” remarked Montoya. “There is nothing you can do. It is just one of those deals. Again, this Target Chevrolet has been amazing all season. The team has done a really good job. This is just the story of our year."
Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team head to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend for another Saturday night showdown under the lights. The 400 will air on TNT and radio stations affiliated with MRN on Saturday, July 10 at 7:30 pm (ET).
