Juan Pablo Montoya and Team Target rallied under the lights at Richmond International Raceway to come home with a sixth-place finish. The top-10 finish is the fifth for the team this season and the sixth-place finish is Montoya’s best finish at the mile facility. The strong performance also moved Montoya up two positions in the points to 18th, just 104 points out of the cut off for the Chase.
Montoya has gone on record as stating that Richmond International Raceway is not one of his favorite race tracks on the circuit calling it a tricky place. His best finish of 10th came at the 2009 spring race and Team Target was looking to better that performance. The team worked on handling throughout the two practice sessions and went on to place the No. 42 Target Chevrolet 19th on the starting grid.
When the green flag waved Saturday evening, Montoya maneuvered through the field and broke into the top-10 after a restart on lap 47. The top-10 run continued for the remaining 400 laps as Montoya endured multiple long green flag runs and pit stops under green flag conditions. Crew chief, Brian Pattie would frequently come across the radio stating, “you are the fastest car out on the track”.
The final pit stop of the evening lined the Target Chevrolet up 11th with five laps remaining. Montoya made the charge to the front and was able to grab five positions before crossing the finish line in the sixth position.
“It was a great night. The Target Chevrolet was amazing’, Montoya remarked. “We ran top-five most of the night. The team did an amazing job. We had a great car. I have said it before; this is a horrible track for me. To finish where we finished is good points and we have to keep it up.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will travel to Darlington Raceway next for another night of short track racing. The Showtime Southern 500 will air Saturday, May 8 at 7:30 pm (EST) on FOX and radio stations affiliated with MRN.
