Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti made an impressive run at the raindelayed Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Monday to finish in the top-five while teammate Scott Dixon finished 18th after contact with the wall on lap 74 of the 100-lap event.
The race started 18 hours after its original start time when more than four inches of rain fell on the streets of St. Petersburg. The field started on dry tires which made for a slippery start to the race with the track surface still damp.
Franchitti started the race from the 13th position but fell to 23rd when he spun on the slick track on lap one. He would work his way up to the sixth position before a flat left rear tire would force a pit stop and drop him to 19th. He made an impressive charge to the front – passing seven cars in the final 11 laps to finish fifth.
Dixon started the race in third and would run at the front of the field throughout the beginning stages of the race, pacing the field for 21 laps. He had the No. 9 Target car running in fourth place when contact with the wall on lap 74 ended his day.
Franchitti is tied for second with Ryan Hunter-Reay and Justin Wilson in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings with 59 points – 44 points behind leader Will Power
By leading 21 laps, Dixon became the third driver to have led 3,000 laps in the IZOD IndyCar Series
In his fifth visit to the track, Franchitti scored his fourth top-five finish
Dixon extended his record of consecutive top-10 starts to 34
Franchitti made his 200th Indy car start at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
With the finishes, Dixon stands 11th in IZOD IndyCar Series points with 40, while Franchitti sits in a three-way tie for second with 59. Up next for Team Target is Round 3 of the IZOD IndyCar Series at the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by Legacy Credit Union Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday, April 11th (3:00 p.m. ET, VERSUS).
Dario Franchitti: “I had such a good start but made a bit of a mistake on the first lap. The car was quick enough to win this thing. We got a flat later in the race and had to come in. Between the flat tire and me screwing up it’s not a bad day to finish fifth."
Scott Dixon: “Credit to Team Target today. I had a great car and it was fast all day. I made a mistake and touched Sato early and that cost us. It was a lot of fun out there. Great weekend and glad so many fans came back today. Tough luck and we'll be back at Barber.”
