13-Car Crash Ends Montoya’s Hope of a Top-Five Finish at Bristol

MINNEAPOLIS - March 22, 2010
Results from Bristol Motor Speedway
1.    Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Chevrolet
2.    Tony Stewart, No. 14 Chevrolet
3.    Kurt Busch, No. 2 Dodge
8.    Jamie McMurray, No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet
26.  Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Target Chevrolet
The No. 42 Target Chevrolet was on track for another strong performance at Bristol Motor Speedway until an accident in front of him on lap 342 left Montoya with nowhere to go. While running in the 17th position, Montoya was collected in a 13 car pile-up in turn three and sustained significant damage. The Target crew was able to make a multitude of stops on pit road to keep the 42 out on the track and finish out the day in 26th.
Montoya was quick right from the start when the team unloaded Friday morning. The Target Chevrolet posted top-five lap times in each of the three practice sessions and continued his streak of top-10 qualifying spots with a sixth place starting position for the Food City 500.
Come race time, the Target Chevrolet was a fixture up front; running the first 300 laps in the top-10 at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile”. Montoya would lead the field back to the start/finish line a total of 29 times and be credited as the Wix Filters Lap Leader at the end of the day. It was on lap 342 that the fate of the team quickly changed. An accident in front of Montoya in turn three left the Target driver with nowhere to go but into the No. 47 car. The damage to the right front fender was significant causing Montoya to bring the Target Chevrolet down pit road five times under caution for repairs and tires. The 42 rejoined the field and was able to overcome an ill-handling race car due to damage and a blown tire in the closing laps to finish in the 26th position just two laps down.
Short tracking race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will continue this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. The Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 will air on FOX and radio stations affiliated with MRN radio on Sunday, March 28 at 1:00 pm (ET).
