sustainable living

We're empowering guests and team members to lead more sustainable lifestyles by providing the right information, tools and incentives to make it easy.

the little things count

Even a few small lifestyle changes can make a big difference for the environment, so we offer programs and activities that make it easier for guests and team members to incorporate more sustainable choices into their lives. By offering quick-and-easy places to recycle materials, pick up a reusable shopping bag and more, we’re working together to make an even bigger impact.

our reusable bag program

Each time a guest buys something at our stores, we offer a 5-cent discount for each reusable bag they use. So far, our guests have used more than 190 million reusable bags instead of paper or plastic. We encourage guests to make reusable bags a regular part of their shopping routine by offering a broad and ever-changing assortment of bags that fit different lifestyles and needs.

recycling in our stores

a Target store recycling station

Since 2010, our recycling kiosks have given guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend our company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.

clear on-package instructions

In 2013, we became a member of the How2Recycle Label program, an initiative  of our non-profit partner GreenBlue’s Sustainable Packaging Coalition. The labeling system is designed to give consumers clear, on-package recycling instructions and encourage participation in recycling programs.

Our teams are working to introduce the labels on our owned brand packaging and shipping materials in the coming months, beginning with our plastic shipping envelopes and select products from our popular up & up brand.

celebrating Earth Day in our stores

Earth Day 2012 reusable Target bags

Each year, we celebrate Earth Day with events and activities in our stores and online to get guests excited about sustainable living. In 2013, for example, we gave away 1.5 million reusable bags and held in-store sampling events where guests could try sustainable products and learn more about them.
