If you’re like us—and celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess—when cooler weather arrives and layering season sets in, hair routines start to take a backseat. The casual high bun then takes center stage and summer’s soft, beachy waves usually bow out. But not this time, with the right year-round tools and product. “You can absolutely wear your hair down with subtle, undone waves,” Kristin says. “I truly think wavy hair is appropriate to wear anytime!”

We asked Kristin to share a few of her favorite products for keeping our beach waves going strong as we head into fall – complete with tips for how to use them and what type of hair they might work best on. Check them out below, then shop them right here

Kristin Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray

How do you use the Dry Finish Working Texture Spray?
Texture spray is something I use whether I heat style my hair or air-dry it to get extra texture and volume. Add a light layer, mess with your hair a little and then add a tiny bit more if you need it.

Which hair type is this spray best used on?
It’s suitable for all hair types! Hair products that are marketed as “dry” are typically powder based and are going to help build volume, so I suggest going light on this spray when it comes to curly or natural textured hair but, I do use it on all hair types.

Do you use this spray when your hair is wet or dry?
This product is to be used when your hair is completely dry and styled. It will add a soft matte texture and increase volume + texture.

Which hair style is this spray best used on? Loose waves? Up-dos?

All of the above. Any time you need to add subtle grit to build volume. It’s very helpful for updos and great for styling hair down as well.

Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Leave-In Conditioner

How do you use the Weightless Shine Leave-in Conditioner?
Right out of the shower, towel dry your hair. Immediately, while hair is still completely wet, apply 5-10 sprays all over your hair. This is weightless when applied to freshly washed hair, so don't be afraid! Then blow dry or air dry as desired.

Do you use it each time you wash your hair?
Yes. And you’ll start to notice an obvious difference when you skip it.

Which hair type is this best used on?
It's the most universal of all the products and I have yet to meet a hair type that doesn't need/love it.

Can you use this spray on wet and dry hair?
This is only to be applied to super-wet hair right out of the shower because it’s just not the same when applied to partially dried hair. It disappears completely when you apply it to freshly washed hair.

Kristin Ess Beach Wave Curling Iron – 1”

How do you use the curling iron?
I like to start a little below the root and work your way to the ends. Keep your iron vertical as opposed to horizontal! This will help keep the curls more narrow and natural looking.

How long can you leave the curling iron on your hair?
There’s no specific time but never let it get too hot. Touch the hair while it’s on the iron. It should never be too hot to touch. Also, start on the lowest heat setting and work your way up to a higher setting if you need it or as you get better at curling.

What heat setting do you recommend?
You’ll find detailed temperature settings for every hair type inside the box!
