Jennifer Hudson stole the show on NBC’s “The Voice” last night with Target’s song of the season, “Round and Round.” The catchy tune is a fun, festive homage to spending time with those you love—and the perfect soundtrack to Target’s “Gather Round” holiday campaign. Jennifer’s soulful take on the classic just might be our favorite holiday music moment yet. (You rocked the song and that Target red, girl). Target’s no stranger to making beautiful music with “The Voice.” Last year, the final contestants teamed up to sing amazing holiday mash-ups and fans loved it. We wanted to go even bigger this year and celebrate the song that’s central to our holiday campaign. Who better than Jennifer Hudson (and an entire children’s choir) to help us do it? What can we say: When you get a chance to team up with a GRAMMY-and-Academy-Award-winning powerhouse and spread some holiday joy at the same time, you break out the iconic red microphone in a heartbeat.

Why were you so excited to perform “Round and Round”?
I love the original version, so I was really excited to make it my own. It is a song about love and cherishing those closest to you, which to me, is such a huge part of the holidays. I wanted to feel that in the music. Bringing in that beautiful children’s choir only added to the spirit. It reminded me of going to holiday parties with my family as a child and singing holiday songs with friends and family.

Give us a peek behind the scenes: How did you prepare for this performance?
I really wanted it to feel like a celebration of the holidays. This is my favorite time of the year and I love all the music of the season. We added elements of gospel and holiday instrumentals in an effort to transport you to a place of joy and love and nostalgia. I just wanted people to feel happy when they hear this song—I want them to be celebrating the spirit of the season.

Speaking of the spirit of the season, any favorite holiday traditions?
Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year! I love listening to holiday music while decorating the tree at home—it’s a tradition we do every year. I also LOVE holiday lights so we go all out at my house the day after Thanksgiving and light up the block. For me, the holidays are all about family, so as long as I’m with family and friends, it’s a beautiful time of year.

I am the ultimate shopper and going to Target is my thing. It’s actually a form of relaxation. Because I’m always on the move, it’s a luxury for me to walk the aisles, filling my cart, and not be rushed.
