In certain parts of the country, families are already thinking about back-to-school prep, and that means it’s almost time to start picking out first-day-of-school outfits. From iridescent and metallic prints, to bold, inspiring graphic tees, the on-trend look for fall is all about showcasing originality and spunk. To help us break down the season’s trends, we brought in stylist to the stars, Karla Birbragher.
“Ever since I was a kid, back-to-school shopping has always been one of my favorite things to do. Now that I have kids of my own, I go to Target because it has everything you can possibly need and all at great prices,” Karla said. “They’re making it easier than ever for me to shop, whether I want to go to my local Target store, buy online or have my order delivered to my door.”
Since Karla knows a thing or two about pulling together stylish looks, we asked her to share her first-day-of-school secrets, the back-to-school trends she’s most excited about and more!

For a first-day-of-school outfit, “I like these skinny embroidered jeans because of the cute cat details on the knees. You can also find embroidery on tees, like this pink one with a positive message. Paired with the cream twill jacket with the paint detail, it ties the look together and gives any girl a cool finishing touch. I love seeing boys dressed like little men and this outfit is totally something a college student would wear. The dark grey jean with the moto detail on the knees is edgy and fun. I paired it with this white astronaut graphic tee and a jean jacket for a styled look.”

“The first thing to consider about any back-to-school outfit is comfort. The second is to keep in mind that the classrooms may be cold. The best dressing option is to layer, like I did with the jean jackets, which is a hot trend for both boys and girls. Kids can always take off the jacket and wrap it around their waist—hey, the ‘90s are back!”

As for following fall style trends, Karla says to look for a few key pieces:
- “Messages of positivity, inclusivity, kindness and empowerment can be found on everything from apparel to supplies and more this back-to-school season. As parents, we’re always looking to instill these values in our kids and I love that through their style, they’re able to show off these positive messages, too.”
- “Iridescent and metallic prints continue to be popular for the back-to-school season. Iridescent glitter and sequins provide a pop of excitement on items like school supplies and accessories. Fun prints and patterns will help kids differentiate their look from the rest.”
- “What better way to encourage creativity and learning than through fashion? This year’s Cat & Jack graphic tees highlight the important role STEM plays in children’s lives through themes like coding, math and science. It’s all about inspiration! From combining prints and patterns, to subtle yet special details, Target’s back-to-school assortment honors each kid’s unique qualities.”

As for Karla’s kids, Lucas and Kylie, they’ve got their own style rules to stick to. “Lucas and Kylie both wear uniforms, but I do buy Lucas’s khakis and blue trousers from the Cat & Jack line. Thankfully, Target offers a wide assortment of fun and trendy accessories, like backpacks, lunch bags and school supplies, to make both their looks memorable and fun!”
