Emily Henderson's living room decorated for the holidays with a tree, presents and seasonal decor

The holidays are hands down our favorite time of the year to decorate the house. From hanging ornaments on the tree to stringing up festive twinkle lights, there’s just so much to do that brings the whole family together. To help get you in the decorating spirit (and to give you some extra-festive inspiration!) we asked Target Home Style Expert Emily Henderson to share her grand plans for this year’s holiday décor.

“This season, I focused on the living room and my children Charlie and Elliot’s rooms. I wanted the kids to be excited and have a say in how we decorated for the holidays, but I also wanted to be happy with how my home looked,” she said. “This will be our first Christmas in the new house which adds another layer of excitement and anticipation!”

Emily decked the halls and created a magical video to show off her work. Check it out:

“When I’m styling for a season, I like to pick a theme or two and stick with them. This year in my living room, I focused on trees and animals. I made sure they were both incorporated in each space I decorated so the room feels pulled together and cohesive. Having a theme in mind makes styling and shopping much easier.”

“I chose a neutral color palette for the living room, incorporating plenty of navymetallics and greenery. It feels very festive but still calm and cohesive,” Emily said. “I think metallics will continue to have a moment past the holiday season—they are perfect for decorating during this time because they work so well for December festivities, but are also relevant through January when families and friends are celebrating the New Year!”

“Charlie loves red, so we used that as inspiration in his room and let him pick out his own ornaments and tree topper for a mini tree we bought him. For Elliot’s room, I used plenty of blush tones and sparkly accents. She’s so happy with the mini tree forest we created.”

Piano decorated with greenery and a faux fur throw

“I’m a big fan of the Threshold light up house stocking holder. I used a few in my living room this year and they are just so whimsical, they make me happy! I also love the Threshold faux fur throw blankets, these have been a staple in my house during the cooler months for years.”

“Greenery and lights instantly make a home feel festive, such as this Wondershop garland. If you are running out of time to decorate, consider adding a mix of fresh and faux greenery throughout your space and layering twinkle lights on your mantel, side tables and other surfaces,” the expert added. “My favorite part of the holidays is joy that it brings my family. I do a lot of styling at my house all year around, but the holiday look is everyone’s favorite!”
