Father’s Day is fast approaching—mark your calendar for June 18!—which means the planning starts now. Whether you’re hosting a fun-filled family get-together or are still puzzling over what dad wants to do this year, Target partner and home designer Nate Berkus has a brilliant idea: Treat dad to an elevated Father’s Day lunch (bonus points if you’re able to keep it a surprise!).

Nate created a Mexican-inspired tablescape at his cousin Hannah’s home, in honor of her husband’s first Father’s Day. Armed with his Target spring home collection and insight into what dads love most (Spoiler: tacos. “I love tacos and I’m a dad, so I can vouch for that being the truth.”), he created a simple, stylish and tasty table that you can easily recreate for dad’s big day. Check it out in the video, below:

“I wanted to create a tablescape that felt sophisticated but was not fussy,” said Nate. To pull off that look, Nate followed a few simple rules: “Choose a color palette and stick to it. Layer in patterns and interesting details—like a woven place mat or a fringed tablecloth. Use vintage or ceramic vases you already own and don’t stress about a full-blown flower arrangement. Bodega flowers or greenery from the garden will look just as good!”

Patterned pops in the table settings

When decorating a space for Father’s Day, Nate says: “Keep it clean and unfussy. Work in a more neutral palette that leans more masculine. The color scheme we chose here was perfect, and by bringing in different patterns we really made it pop. The pattern on the black-and-white ceramic plates is so striking. It’s just the right mix of modern and masculine, which was perfect for a table set specially made for dad.”

“It’s important that, as the host, you get to enjoy and be present at the party,” said Nate. “Do as much as you can beforehand. Make sure the tablecloth and napkins are washed and ironed; have the food ordered and ready to go; pre-make cocktail pitchers or juices.”
