Cool for the Summer: Pacifica Suncare Debuts Exclusively at Target

Since Brook Harvey-Taylor’s family spends most of their free time in the sun—swimming, surfing and hanging out at the beach—the Pacifica founder grew inspired to expand the brand’s skincare line into a category that would keep her loved ones protected while they’re out having fun. Enter: Pacifica Suncare—a Target-exclusive assortment that marries UVA and UVB protection with the elevated and potent powers of caffeine and probiotics in its sunscreens, face shades, bronzers and balms.

Each of the Pacifica Suncare products feature all-mineral SPF formulas, including the first mineral SPF 50 spray to hit the market—inspired by Brook’s teenage daughter Xiaxia. The products are water resistant for up to 80 minutes, include no chemical UV absorbers and stay true to Pacifica’s mission of being vegan and cruelty free. Plus, unlike some mineral sunscreens that leave your skin looking dry and chalky, the Pacifica team concocted a mineral sunscreen formula that not only works but makes your skin look fresh and radiant.

What sets this suncare line apart from traditional sunscreen offerings?
The big point of difference for this collection is our serious approach to skincare meets suncare. We are also offering a few unusual products, like our Mineral Bronzer with SPF 30, which leaves you with a mineral glow so your skin looks radiant, and our SPF 50 Continuous Spray that hydrates and nourishes. But remember, you have to use enough product, whether it is mineral or chemical, to get the best protection when you are in the sun.

Why is this suncare line perfect for the Target guest?
This line hits a lot of sweet spots and is a true problem solver. It is all mineral SPF, void of chemical sunscreens, full of skin care benefits, water resistant for 80 minutes, and surfer approved. Plus, just like our other Pacifica skincare products, our suncare products are in chic packaging so when you take it out of your beach bag it looks super cute! The Target guest expects to get the best value and these sunscreens deliver on all fronts while offering surprising extras.

How does it feel to be expanding your offerings at Target?
I love our customers for trusting our brand and following us into new categories. The team I get to work with is so smart and thoughtful with a lot of great insights. Expanding our brand at Target means that we get to further serve our mission to bring the best, safest products at the best prices to the largest audience. Everyone deserves amazing products and ingredients, and Target believes this as well.

Caffeine and probiotics are two key ingredients that make a big appearance in the line—what drew you to those?
Why shouldn’t your sunscreen have skin care benefits too? Besides the SPF actives, the main skincare ingredient call outs in the line are probiotics and caffeine, and whole line smells like real coconut. I love using caffeine as a skin energizer, and it has antioxidant properties. Probiotics (and of course ours are vegan) are said to bring back the good bacteria to your skin to promote skin health and vitality. Coconut smells like surf wax and reminds me of summer and the beach!

How did you come up with the idea for the first-ever mineral SPF 50 spray?
My daughter, Xiaxia figured out that all of the mineral sunscreen I had been making her wear over the years made her skin look dry and chalky. So she started borrowing her friend’s non-mineral sunscreen. Xiaxia motivated me to create the first mineral SPF 50 continuous spray because she is so picky about what she uses on her skin. Not picky like I am, where safety and sustainability comes first, but picky like a teenage girl who wants to look good at the beach. This formula is oil-based instead of water based and so it also hydrates your skin while providing SPF coverage.

Why is it important to you to create vegan, cruelty-free products?
I grew up on a little cattle ranch in Montana and I (and my family) raised animals.  We were really kind to our animals and I loved them all. But sending them off to become food lead me to become vegan as a young woman, and this is when we started Pacifica. We won’t even use beetles (carmine), beeswax or lanolin in our products.
