All-star dad and television host Jorge Bernal loves a good adventure. So it’s no surprise that…his two kids do, too! This coming Father’s Day and summer, with school—and the sun—out, son Lucas, 6, and daughter Kylie, 1, have a ton of fun activities planned with dad. Read on to learn about their adventures (or as we like to call them, “dad”ventures)!
Father’s Day is right around the corner! What are your plans for the big day?
We are getting the family together for Father’s Day and heading out to the beach for some fun and then coming home for a delicious barbecue. The kids will be able to spend time together with their cousins and I’m sure fun times will be had by all. It really doesn’t matter what we do, as long as we do it together!
What's your favorite thing to do with your kids during the warm weather months?
Without a doubt, beach, pool and a little sun! Lucas loves the water—especially the beach. He took swimming lessons last year and since then, he enjoys jumping, swimming and searching for ‘toy treasures’ at the bottom of the pool. Kylie loves being outside as well, and we’ll be taking her to the beach for the first time this summer. I'm sure she will have a blast.

What’s one big family adventure you have planned for the summer?
A cruise to the Caribbean! My wife Karla and I love cruising—we’ve enjoyed several trips and Lucas has joined us on two of them. This will be the first time we also take Kylie along with us. Of course, Karla has been planning for the trip by picking out summer outfits for Kylie and Lucas. I can’t begin to explain how many hats, sunglasses, sundresses and bathing suits she has gotten for the kids! One good tip for cruises: Since there are no airlines involved or weight requirements, you can pack an extra suitcase full of toys so the kids can be entertained in the cabin during downtime.
What are some important things to keep in mind when planning outings with young children?
Packing plenty of water and snacks is really important, especially when there’s a long drive involved. Other important things are sun protection, whether it’s lotion or hats or even clothing that blocks those dangerous UV rays. Also, small toys and games that can easily be packed to avoid times where boredom sets in and the kids get cranky.

When you were younger, what activities did you enjoy doing with your father that you enjoy doing with your kids today?
My dad and I would always build things together; he is a mechanic and taught me the value of doing things with my hands. Today with Lucas, we enjoy doing those very same things. We like Jenga because it teaches patience, skill and forward thinking—not to mention, it’s fun! We recently got the Giant Sized Jenga and man, it’s so addictive! With Kylie, I enjoy the beautiful, simple things like blowing bubbles and splashing outside in the pool. Kylie recently learned how to blow her own bubbles with the Fubbles No-Spill Bubbles because there is no messy soap on her hands and no liquid spills.
