Heard Joy Mangano’s name a lot lately? You’re not alone. The American inventor, entrepreneur and president of Ingenious Designs has created dozens of well-known products, including the Huggable Hangers, My Little Steamer and the newly reinvented Miracle Mop. She’s also the inspiration for the film “Joy,” which just earned Jennifer Lawrence a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination.
Joy’s no stranger to Target—we’ve carried her Huggable Hangers since 2008 and they’ve been a major hit. Now, we’re bringing guests even more Joy—we just launched an expanded collection of her organization and household products. What’s new? The new Miracle Mop, Memory Cloud Pillow, My Little Steamer, Forever Fragrant, Better Beauty Case, and more colors of the Huggable Hangers … just to name a few. Check out the full collection in all stores and at Target.com/joymangano with prices ranging from $8.99 to $59.99.
Joy’s products are hitting Target just in time for the New Year, when guests are focused on resolutions and making a fresh start—whether that’s eating healthier, saving money or getting organized. To celebrate the launch, Joy stopped by Target Headquarters for an Outer Spaces event. During an on-stage chat and Q&A session with Brian Cornell, chairman and CEO, Target, Joy answered questions about the importance of teamwork, reinvention and great design. A few of the highlights:
What motivates you to keep doing great work?
“Every day I ask myself, what am I going to tackle today? Everyone has great ideas, and I believe that if you love what you’re doing, and are engaged in the work, you should trust your own expertise and keep pushing your idea forward. Pay attention to what you love and look for opportunities to do those things. Developing the first iteration of the Miracle Mop was a major milestone in my life—it was the moment when I embarked on the path I was meant to be on. It’s also important to partner with people who want to get things done, who see opportunities and want to use their talents.”
What kinds of things do you think about when you’re designing a new product?
“The customer—the guest—is always No. 1. Everything you do, every detail you add or change you make to a product, needs to be done with them in mind. How will you impact their lives? The best thing is when I hear from happy customers that one of my products has changed their lives, and made it easier for them to do something they couldn’t do before. Then I know I’ve made a real difference.”
What’s your approach when you have to make tough decisions or go in a new direction?
“When you believe in something, you’ve got to stand behind it, and if something’s not right, don’t be afraid to speak up. The first time I demanded to go onstage and sell my own products—that was huge, and really scary. I’d never done anything like that before. But I knew it was the right move for my business, and it turned out to be explosive—the beginning of a phenomenon! You have to take control of your own destiny and trust what you know.”
What do you want guests to know about your products?
“When guests see Joy products at Target, they can be sure my team and I looked closely at every detail to make them quality, affordable pieces. That’s what makes them stand out. I’m proud to be a part of the Target family!”
