Carissa Moore Eyes World Championship Title as She Heads to Target Maui Pro Surfing Competition

2015 has been a stellar year for pro-surfer and Target athlete Carissa Moore, and she’s hoping to cap it off with her third career Women’s World Championship title. With three of this year’s championship event wins already under her belt, Carissa is leading the ratings, with fellow competitor Courtney Conlogue the only other contender for the crown. Next up, Carissa heads to Honolua Bay in Maui to compete at the second annual Target Maui Pro women’s surfing competition. (She won the inaugural event last year.) Target will again be the title sponsor of this year’s event taking place Nov. 21 through Dec. 4—the 10th and final stop on the World Surf League’s championship tour.

How does Carissa get ready for a big event like this? “I’ve had a few weeks at home since the last event to relax a little and get back into a routine of training, surfing and yoga,” she says. “I snuck over to Honolua Bay during one of the swells to try out some of my equipment. Everything is feeling really good. I’m a little nervous, but I can’t wait to put the jersey on!”

To ensure the contestants have optimal waves, the event will run on the best three days of surf over the two-week period. Check out the official trailer for just a small taste of the action viewers will likely see.

“Events like the Maui Pro mean so much to our local community,” says Scott Hayes, who leads the team at Target’s Kahului store. “Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing and the sport has such an important influence in the culture of our state. We’re excited to cheer on Carissa Moore and have an athlete of her caliber representing our brand and our state.”

This year’s event has some changes in store. In lieu of a single wild card competitor, the Target Maui Pro will host a trials heat with four of Hawaii’s top junior women’s surfers—Carissa’s sister Cayla Moore, Dax McGill, Brisa Henessy, and Summer Macedo—competing for a coveted spot in the contest. “It’s so cool that we’ve got these four amazing girls from Hawaii in the trials,” Carissa says. “They’re each so talented and I’m really looking forward to watching them rip! Whoever wins will take the wildcard spot in my heat. It would be a dream come true to have a heat with my sister.”
