When we saw their collection of spotted and striped paper products, we had to learn more about the line (and couldn’t help but ask how the company got its sweet name). Read on for our exclusive interview with Chelsea:
How did you come up with the name “Sugar Paper?”
We think the name Sugar Paper perfectly describes what we do. We make paper so pretty that it feels like candy.
What was the inspiration behind the Sugar Paper for Target line?
We created the collection with mixing and matching in mind to allow guests to personalize each package. The color stories allow you to choose your favorite items and color combinations to truly make the collection your own. Sugar Paper is known for dots and stripes so naturally we have those, but we also created some cute holiday illustrations that we used to add a playful edge.
Tell us about the process of creating these products for Target: What role did each of you play in the process?
Jamie and I are great partners in that we both share a very similar aesthetic. We co-design and art direct everything we make at Sugar Paper. We both have to love a design for the item to appear in the offering.
What are your favorite patterns or items from the Target assortment?
We love the glitter letters! We not only use them to personalize packages, but we’ve also found that they can be used as a monogram at a place setting, or hung on a tree as an ornament. We’re also pretty in love with the nesting boxes. Each box has a foil Swiss dot pattern on the inside to add a surprise when you open the box.
How has it been collaborating with Target?
Having a line at Target is a huge departure from where we began. After the line was complete, it occurred to us that millions of people would unwrap packages wrapped in the paper we designed. That’s pretty unreal. And we have had such a wonderful experience with the Target team! We worked closely together on product design and development and they were quick to ensure the quality was up to our (very high) standards. It’s so wonderful to see it all come together in such a beautiful way.
Sugar Paper is now available in stores and on Target.com for prices ranging from $1 to $12!
