Gooey, charred and silky smooth—a smooshed marshmallow housed between two crumbling crackers and slathered in chocolate brings back the memories of childhood summers, sitting beside a crackling fire. Now all grown up, we’re ready for our s’mores to get an upgrade, with gourmet ingredients, local goods and “foodie” worthy flavors.
To celebrate the end of summer and pending fall, we tapped into the genius of the Target Test Kitchen to mix and match the iconic smoky snack with chewy, spicy, sweet, sour and just plain quirky add-ons and substitutions for a grown up campfire roast. The Test Kitchen is keeping to the classic base of mallow and graham, but shaking things up with mouth-watering toppings like extra crispy bacon and caramelized banana. We’re swapping out the melted Hersheys for other decadent flavors: caramel sauce, peanut butter and chocolate hazelnut spread, then tipping the flavor scale with garnishes like sea salt.
Grab a skewer, and as the evening air begins to cool, comfort yourself with s’more summer eats that celebrate the old with something totally new.
