Scott Dixon, one of the greatest IndyCar drivers in history, already has 36 wins under his belt, including the 2008 Indy 500. But he’s not showing any sign of slowing down. This weekend, we’ll be cheering him on as he races for another win at the 99th Indianapolis 500 — don’t forget he won last weekend’s pole!
A Bullseye View had the privilege of sitting down with the New Zealand-born legend before the big race to hear about his impressive career, season goals and what keeps him “on track.”
How does it feel to be considered one of the greatest IndyCar drivers in history?
I think I’m very fortunate to have made a career in motor racing and spent the majority of it with Team Target. I’m not really one to look at the record books; there will be plenty of time for that when I’m done driving. I think you always have to think about the next race; you have to take them one at a time. The goals each season for myself and the team are to win the championship and the Indianapolis 500.
What do you think will be going through your head during this year’s Indy 500?
You have to really focus on each race as it comes. You try to have the same routine and approach for each race, but the Indy 500 is a bit different in that there’s a lot going on, not only for the race, but for the entire month of May. It’s a great time of the year.
How do you prepare for big races like the Indy500?
A lot of people don’t get to see behind the scenes and all the effort that goes into the 500. Not just on my end training six days a week, but the 100 people and the work that goes into preparing for these racecars.
Of all your races, which has been the most important to you?
It’s hard to pick just one, but the win in the Indianapolis 500 was really special. I got married earlier that year and we won the championship that season, too, so it was a very special time in my life.
What’s one thing that would surprise people who don’t follow racing?
Race cars don’t have power steering. You have to be 100 percent focused for nearly four hours, hitting all your marks and not making any mistakes. You really have to be on your game.
